Think prices can’t get any worse? Wait till you see this $90 pub meal

Diners at one pub have been left fuming over the price of a classic menu staple.

What was once a humble Aussie pub meal is now being compared to the cost of an actual plane ticket.

And many are saying it’s the last straw for ‘affordable’ pub dining.

The Peakhurst, located in Sydney’s St George area, sparked outrage after charging $90 for a 350-gram Scotch Fillet listed as a ‘chef’s special’.

Although the cut boasts a Marble Score of 4+—a grade indicating high-quality beef—the price tag has left patrons stunned.

The steak comes with mashed potato, roasted root vegetables, and Café de Paris butter, but for one diner, that wasn’t enough to justify the cost.

‘At my local, 90 bucks for a steak, not even a “recommended for two” type thing,’ the customer wrote on social media.

‘I don't mind paying a bit of coin at a hatted restaurant where you're getting the service and the ambience, but this is beyond taking the p*ss.’

Another social media user noted that flights from Sydney to Melbourne often cost just $75—making the meal more expensive than a domestic flight.

The Peakhurst’s own website describes it as a ‘local premium bar and bistro’, with standard pub fare such as chicken schnitzel parmigiana and buttermilk fried chicken burgers.

Despite the venue’s positioning, diners took issue with both the price and the self-service style, with customers having to collect their own cutlery.

One social media user even ran the numbers to see if the cost could be justified.

‘A MB4+ Ribeye Grass Fed Scotch Fillet is $72.99kg or about $25 for 350g and all you need is a cast iron skillet and a bit of salt and butter to make it at home,’ they posted.

‘At what point do we say that you're really not offering me anything here but a cut of meat and some mash?’

Dozens echoed the sentiment online.

‘RIP affordable pubs,’ one person said.

‘Pubs are getting pretty out there with prices, especially when you consider most of it is just meat/veg/veg,’ added another.

‘The funny thing is, people will buy food less and less and management will go “Oh no, people aren't buying our food. We have to put prices up to make up the difference”,’ a third chimed in.

When contacted, a spokesperson for The Peakhurst defended the pricing, pointing to the sourcing of the meat.

‘The producer of this cut of beef, Little Joe’s, is a small farm, the animals are extremely well cared for, they have an extremely high marble score, and have won numerous awards for being some of the best beef in the world,’ they said.

‘We can't give away a product at less than the margins we need to keep our business open.

‘If customers don't want a prime cut of beef, they can make a decision based on their own affordability.’

Even so, the steak remained one of the most expensive in Sydney.

Bistecca, a well-known CBD steakhouse, charges $21 per 100 grams—meaning a 350g steak would only cost $73.50.

Meanwhile, The Peakhurst’s other steaks still sat on the higher end of the scale at $45 each.

The Peakhurst has been contacted for further comment.

If you thought $90 for a pub steak was over the top, it’s not the only price tag making diners do a double take.

Another pub came under fire recently for serving up a surprisingly small steak at a premium cost—sparking similar outrage online.

Here’s how one meal left customers feeling short-changed despite the hefty bill.
