'They’re heroes': tradies leap into action to save woman from house fire

When a life is at risk, split-second decisions can make all the difference.

What started as an ordinary day quickly turned into a heroic rescue that no one could have predicted.

The dramatic turn of events left witnesses in shock and sparked a wave of admiration for the brave individuals involved.

Two tradies have been hailed as heroes after they rescued an elderly woman from a burning house in Seaton, Adelaide, while on their lunch break.

The fire broke out at a home on Harold Street on 17 December around 12:15 pm, with thick smoke billowing from the property. Mike Ajami, a solar installer, and his colleague were driving past when they spotted the blaze.

Upon realising there was someone still inside, they jumped the fence to help. The 70-year-old woman had reportedly been asleep when the fire ignited and was in the backyard at the time of the rescue.

'Get out! Rob, push her, push her,' Mr Ajami can be heard shouting in a video filmed at the scene. 'There’s a lady there, she’s trying to get the fire out. Holy f*** bro.'

The tradies were able to lift the woman over the fence, saving her from further danger. She was later rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly, and neighbours praised the two for their quick thinking. 'They’re heroes, they really are because she wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them,' one neighbour said.

Mr Ajami recalled how bystanders had pointed out that the woman was in the backyard, but no one had attempted to rescue her. 'Everyone was yelling, there was a lady at the back.No one was going to go and get her,' he said. 'So me and my mate jumped the fence.'

The house was severely damaged by the fire, with South Australia Police confirming that the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
