The ultimate supermarket finger food showdown: Christmas edition

Eat, drink, and be merry because it’s finally Christmas, folks! Along with the Yuletide season comes the annual (and unspoken) battle of the supermarkets to come up with the best food offerings for shoppers.

So, if you’re looking for the best among the rest, check out the list below!

Christmas-themed snacks have always been a bit of a hit-or-miss for shoppers, with mutant products such as cranberry-stuffed turkey balls and pepperoni spring rolls (which seems like a travesty) to a sausage wreath.

So, we’ve gathered feedback on a couple of supermarket finger foods for a good, bad, and ‘who thought this was a good idea?’ list, and hopefully, give you some inspiration on what to serve guests this holiday season.

Starting off the naughty list is ALDI’s Scallops Wrapped in Maple Bacon. The seafood and meat combination idea seemed good on paper, but the briny taste of the scallops and the savoury-sweet flavour of the bacon cannot work well together in our opinion – but you’re welcome to try it out for yourself.

Next up is the ‘Christmas’ slider kit from Woolies. The product has three sliders – complete with lettuce and tomatoes – with a hearty serving of beef and pork patties rolled into ‘soft milk buns’ on the front of the box:

But the actual product inside the kit begs to differ:

Now we know there will be slight discrepancies between what’s advertised and what’s in each kit, but seeing those small patties left us feeling a bit disappointed. Also, what made these sliders Christmas-y? We’ll never know.

Another one on our ‘who said this was a good idea?’ list is Coles’ Entertaining Prawns in Blankets. We don’t know if this was made as an alternative to tempura, an attempt at a spring roll, or a combination of the two. However, some shoppers have said that the prawns were tasty, so why not give them a go?

Moving on to our ‘nice’ list, we have ALDI’s Lobster Puff Pastry Canapés. While these don’t look appetising, they are apparently scrumptious.

The puff pastry is packed with premium lobster meat with cream cheese and herb filling, making it a great snack for guests, or if you just want something to snack on in front of the telly.

A strong replacement for Coles’ Prawns in a Blanket has emerged: Woolworths Pigs in a Blanket and it is as good as it gets. They’re cheap and savoury, and they’re great to serve guests while waiting for Christmas dinner to finish cooking – you can’t go wrong with this classic finger food.

And finally, we have Coles Entertaining Crumbed Pork Bites as the best supermarket finger food! The pork bites cost $7 for an 8-piece pack. It also has a balanced taste of apple sauce filling mixed with salty pork. The meat also doesn’t have that rubbery texture compared to other products within the same price range too.

I don't eat seafood but I might give the pigs in blankets a go if I can find them easily when I go to the shops later in the week. :)
