The truth about Qantas Club lounges according to flyers – ‘An embarrassment to Australia!’

When we think of exclusive airline club lounges, the first few things that usually come to mind are luxurious dining experiences, exceptional cleanliness, and outstanding services.

However, it seems like Australia is failing to meet expectations after countless passengers raised concerns about Qantas’ club lounges.

The situation got so out of hand that they were deemed an ‘embarrassment to Australia’ and ‘one of the greatest rip-offs of all time’.

Last week, a TikTok user named Kiki gave us a glimpse of the lounge in the form of a scathing video review.

‘Making myself a “$700” toasted sandwich at the Qantas lounge.’ she captioned the clip. ‘Needless to say, I got scammed hard. It’s dirty and the food is sh**.’

Qantas charges a $99 'joining fee' plus $600 for a one-year membership, which gives passengers access to its lounges. Kiki referenced this hefty fee as the cost of her sandwich.

She was forced to make the sandwich herself, using the 'make your own toastie station' situated at the lounge's buffet section.

After the bad experience, she immediately emailed Qantas to cancel her membership but claimed that the airline did not respond.

'I will never make this mistake again.' she declared.

Unfortunately, Kiki isn’t the only disgruntled member of the club. Frequent flyers of Qantas have previously slammed the airline due to issues with food quality, cleanliness, and services inside the exclusive lounges.

On productreview.com.au, Qantas Club received a brutal average of 1.3 stars from 83 reviews. Many pointed out that the airline has been in a slump compared to its previous standard.

'Why can't I give 0 stars?' one member asked.

'Filthy as always!' another wrote after allegedly stumbling across ‘rubbish on seats, sticky tables, and dirty floors' inside the lounge.

'One would think that Qantas would at least ensure a clean club, considering it IS their premier attraction at any airport.' a third added.

'If this is truly Australia's premium carrier, then I am embarrassed.' one man wrote after being allegedly presented with a 'choice of green leaf salad, boiled potatoes, and watered down pumpkin soup or a self-made ham and cheese toastie' in Brisbane.

Qantas received a higher rating on airlinequality.com, with an average of 5 out of 10 from 244 reviews. However, the recent reviews were far from comforting.

'Terrible coffee, food that is of such low standard, and very limited options. All this in a lounge that feels dated. Really an embarrassment to Qantas.’ one woman detailed.

A British tourist shared that he found the lounge 'extremely poor' and added that the ‘exclusive’ attitude of staff was at odds with the standards inside, saying: 'Officious staff which I found rather a surprise – like they're doing you a favour by letting you into “their” lounge. So many lessons to be learned here about what not to do.'

A third chimed: 'The club is run down and has bad facilities for such a high price there is no point going there seeing as they discriminate your clothes as well as your look.’

'We had a rather hectic time visiting the Qantas Club lounge at the Sydney airport. There were only a few seats available, the lounge was noisy, and the food was ordinary.' one more criticised.

Can't make a Like or dislike of the service, although I did notice ten years ago when I last used the services it seems to be going downhill.

I have to agree the standards of service and food at most of the lounges are below my expectations. I travel to Auckland each year and for the past two years the QANTAS lounge at Auckland has been nonexistent. A closed dark space with no signage. I worked out that if you go to Air New Zealand's lounge, they will accept you but there is no signage at the old QANTAS lounge advising you of this service.
Also a few years ago I was at the Rome international airport and was not allowed access to the QANTAS lounge unless I paid 90 Euro (I was a paid-up member of QANTAS CUB) so of course to enter myself and my husband it would have cost 180 Euro!!

Qantas can't afford any extras after they pay Chris Joyce's salary, what a disgrace, We the taxpayers should own Qantas after all.the bailout money. Our government has a lot to answer for. We should at least own shares.

I have flown Qantas 24 times in the past 18 months and have been offered the same GF rice crisps on every flight. I joined the lounge to get GF options while transiting but the standards and options are often disappointing. Getting up at 5am and expecting to have GF bread for toast (breakfast) Brisbane airport only to discover they have run out (at 9am) of GF bread is disgraceful

I too have watched the decline in standards and service in Qantas lounges. Recently it looks like happy hour at the local mining town with so many fly in fly out workers crowding in and clogging up the bar. I now am thinking of not even going in.

I think that maybe someone should remind Alan Joyce that you're only as good as your worst review. You should always be striving to turn all the negative reviews into positive ones.;)
Typical response about the negative versus positive. As a retired business owner, I was responsible for anything that went wrong, so should Alan Joyce, take it on board (no pun intended) fix it, and stop running Qantas like a game.

The state of the lounge is a reflection on patrons. People who spill drinks or drop food should have good manners and clean up after themselves. The lounge is not ser up to be staffed, and is help yourself. I remember being a guest and choosing apple pie and cream while waiting to see my brother off from Perth.

Memories of a once in a lifetime treat in the business class lounge at Dubai airport was a man picking his nose right up to his eyeballs, then rolling around the contents and flinging them off into the unknown!! I couldn't change seats as my companion said don't move from here, then I will remember where you are. (it was busy as)

That would be Allan Joyce Robbo but I hear you - overpaid and overrated Irishman - worst thing ever was to sell off Qantas, Telstra and the various utilities - we are all paying through the nose for the CEO's of these unfortunate companies.
