My son absolutely loved Sooty and we took him to Hobart to see the Sooty Show when it visited our capital city. People were astounded that we would take a child to the other end of the state simply to see a live show in a theatre, (it was about a 3 hr. trip each way & a lot of Tasmanians don’t like to go far) but the show was amazing and geared for adults & children. It was an amazing weekend. I still love live theatre & we took our boy to whatever shows came to the state, which wasn’t many over 35 years ago. He still has his Sooty puppet somewhere.

I had all the hand puppets - but Sooty was the best.
Basil Brush was another one that I loved to watch.
The HR Puffinstuff - Witchypoo.
As a teenager it was Hey,Hey Its Saturday & Agro.
But through all the years there has only been 1 main one - DR WHO.

I remember Sooty and Sweep on our black and white TV. When the show came to Coventry we got really good seats at the Civic Hall to see them perform right in front of us. How simple it all was compared to the multi techno noisy performances presented now. We also loved Andy Pandy, Muffin the Mule, Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men. We learnt to be kind and gentle to others with no monsters, Superheroes or dangerous exploits that involved killing our enemies to copy. That all came in our adult years.

Times certainly have changed, even since my son, now 43, was small. We used to go to the cinema & saw most of the children’s movies & some were rather enjoyable. It was mainly Sesame Street, Playschool on ABC TV & Fat Cat & Humphrey Bear on the commercial channels. Sooty & Thomas the Tank Engine were absolute favourites. I despair when I see TV shows & movies advertised these days. Makes me glad that I no longer have to watch them. TV didn’t arrive in north Tasmania until 1960 so I spent a lot of my childhood without it. We have come a long way since then with being able to watch things happening overseas as they’re taking place Instead of waiting months.
