The origin of teddy bears
It’s hard to imagine a world without teddy bears. Those soft, cuddly companions that have comforted generations of children (and quite a few adults, too). But did you know their story begins with a U.S. president on a hunting trip? Back in 1902, President Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt was invited for a bear hunt. While others in the group found success, Roosevelt hadn’t spotted a single bear. To help him out, his guides tied a small black bear to a tree and suggested he take the shot. Roosevelt, finding the idea unfair and unsporting, flatly refused.
This act made headlines at the time, so much so, that it caught the attention of a cartoonist, Clifford Berryman, who lightheartedly mocked the former President for refusing to shoot the bear. Brooklyn shop owner Morris Michtom saw the cartoon Berryman made and took the opportunity. Along with his wife Rose, he created a stuffed toy bear, naming it 'Teddy’s Bear' in honour of Roosevelt’s good sportsmanship. With Roosevelt’s blessing, the couple went on to produce the bear in droves, founding the Ideal Toy Company in the process. More than a century later, teddy bears remain a beloved symbol of comfort and kindness.
