But as we've learned, never say never in show business. Fast forward to 2023, and the musical has conquered Broadway and is embarking on an Australian season set to begin in Brisbane this October.
During his So Happy It Hurts tour, Adams, the Run To You star, reminisced about the seed of the idea in 2007 by a former dancer girlfriend.
Despite the initial rejection, a chance encounter with a Broadway director reignited the flame, and soon Adams and his longtime songwriting partner Jim Vallance were crafting tunes that would capture the essence of the beloved film.
Writing for a musical, as Adams discovered, is a different beast compared to penning rock hits.
'It was ever-changing, and there were moments of exasperation and moments of elation, and it was just the process of Broadway,' he said.
'Recently, I’ve been speaking to some people about doing another musical, and I got on the phone with these two producers in New Yor,k and the first thing they asked me was "Why would you want to do another musical?"'
It's a collaborative effort that he describes as 'songwriting by committee,' a process filled with frustration and triumph.
But the hard work paid off, and the musical's opening number, Welcome to Hollywood, was enough to win over the producers.
Pretty Woman: The Musical has since enjoyed a successful run, opening in Chicago in 2018 before moving to Broadway and then touring Europe, the UK, Ireland, and North America.
The excitement for the musical's arrival is palpable, especially after a slight hiccup when Adams' Perth concert was cancelled due to a sewer fatberg threatening the plumbing.
'Last night’s concert could not proceed due to an external Perth Water Corporation issue, which was unable to be fixed in time,' Frontier Touring wrote.
'The issue, which impacted all of Wellington Street, meant that it was deemed unsafe for patrons to enter RAC Arena.'
