The most effective trick to neutralise ‘spicy chilli hands’ according to a chef
- Replies 2
While chilli can be a fantastic ingredient to turn to if you’re looking to boost your meal’s flavour, there are a couple of things that you have to watch out for: forgetting to clean your hands after handling them and burning the body parts you may touch.
Fortunately, one chef revealed a tried-and-tested trick that efficiently removes chilli remnants from your hands. All it requires is one common item that you may already have sitting in your pantry.
Kelly Scott admitted to falling victim to the power of a chilli burn. Absent-mindedly rubbing her eyes after preparing them and being left with a stinging sensation every time.

All chilli varieties are said to contain capsaicin, which is a spicy and oily substance that even a thorough wash under running water can’t fix. So the next time you’re stuck with ‘spicy chilli hands’, neutralise the heat with olive oil instead!
'I just learned the best cooking hack that blew my mind,’ The chef said in a TikTok video.
'If you ever cut jalapeños or spicy serrano chillis, you’re going to want to try this. Whenever I cut chilli, I always end up with spicy chilli hands.’
'Even when I wash it, the water just moves it around. You know how when you eat something spicy and chugging water makes it worse? Same thing with cutting chilli and washing your hands. I always forget and touch my eyes… It burns.' she continued.
'What you do is pour a little bit of olive oil on a paper towel and then rub it on the areas that touched the chilli. It picks up all the capsaicin–the thing that’s spicy.'
After coating her hands with olive oil and then washing it all off, she decided to put the hack to the ultimate test.
‘I’m going to test it by rubbing my eyes.’ she declared.
Much to her surprise (and ours because that’s certainly one way to do it), Kelly said that she felt ‘nothing’ after lightly poking her eyeball with the hand that touched the chilli.

‘It works!’ she announced excitedly.
Kelly’s TikTok video garnered over 31k views, with dozens flocking to the comments to express their amazement.
‘Thank you for sharing this. I usually end up using a produce bag. While it’s effective, it isn't very easy. Thanks for saving me!’ one user wrote.
‘Wow, this is so helpful. It does work!’ chimed another.
‘D**n, I’m 43 years old and cook all the time. I didn't know this trick until today. Awesome!’ praised a third.
But several were blown away by Kelly’s dedication to proving that the hack truly works, with one saying: ‘I was so scared for you! Thank heavens that it worked.’
‘Oh my, way to take one for the team, girl!’ another added.
‘Living on the edge, girl. I’d be scared to touch my eye no matter what.’ one more commented.
