I reckon I’ve always been pretty lucky, but sometimes you really get to wondering if, somehow, your destiny seems to have been planned. Of course, when things go wrong, our nature (as perverse human beings) doesn’t tell us that it was planned to (say) have a car accident and end up in a wheelchair or worse.
I’d been a university student at Battersea College in the 60s, and instead of studying hard, as was expected of me, I bought a little 1933 Austin 7 that needed a fair bit of TLC – time I should have spent on my studies.
I got a job at Butlins Holiday Camp in Bognor Regis in Sussex in the amusement park while I waited for my exam results. I really enjoyed the work, and like any normal teenager, I went on dates with a lot of girls who were only there for a week at a time. I was having such a good time I even extended my ‘contract’ another two weeks, performing in a couple of talent contests. (One playing lead guitar for ‘Theme for Young Lovers’ by the Shadows, and one singing a couple of my own compositions!)
