The little-known secret behind the new Woolworths price tag markings that you need to know

We previously shared with you the secret behind the different markings found on price tags on ALDI products and how you can identify items that are being sold on sale.

Now, we'd like to share some little-known information about the new blue lights found on the price tags of some Woolworths items.

SDC member Jenny, who uses the username @JayKay, has reached out to the team to reveal the secret behind the new marking after she asked a staff member about it.

She quipped: "Further to the significance of price tags in our supermarkets, today I passed a new one for me in Woolies."

SDC member Jenny admitted that the “blue light” marking found on the price tags on some items in her local Woolworths store made her curious. Credit: Woolworths.

Jenny said that the peculiar marking caught her attention when she noticed that the normal price tags on the items found at her local Woolies store have "a little circle in the top right-hand corner" on each one of them, noting that all of them were marked with black circles except for one, which was marked with a blue light.

Our dear member then went on to ask a store staff member to learn more about the new markings.

"I explained that my curiosity got the better of me," she said.

The Woolies worker then disclosed to her that the items with the blue lights on them were ordered by online shoppers.

Jenny said that the explanation was as follows: "When products are ordered by online shoppers, the little blue light turns on."

"When the store workers collect the online products for the customer, they can go straight to the product with the blue light on."

She also said that the new markings can save time for Woolies workers, highlighting that the tags help staff members to easily identify and pack the items without the need to read all the labels of the products.

"The product I saw with the light on was an Indian type of sauce, and there were lots of varieties in this section, so I could see how it would make it easier and quicker for the worker filling out the order," Jenny said.

The new markings may possibly be part of the upgrades in member @JayKay’s local Woolworths store. Credit: Jackie Ghossein.

Our sleuthy member also shared with us that the new feature might be part of the retailer's store upgrades as her local store has gone through a "massive update".

Other features in her recently upgraded local store include the installation of new checkouts and more security cameras.

"New checkouts, the fruit and veggies have changed ends, stick in the aisles have changed positions, the delicatessen frig products have been moved, and there are many more security cameras," she described.

We, however, have yet to confirm if Woolworths is upgrading its stores nationwide, so you might want to be on the lookout for updates in your local stores.

So, there you have it, folks! If you encounter items with blue lights on their price tags in your local Woolworths store, it means that they’ve been ordered by someone online.

Again, a special shoutout to our dear member @JayKay for this information. The SDC team appreciates your effort in sharing this secret with us!

I would like someone from Woolies to verify this as it seems to me that every item in the store should have a blue light. Sounds like this was April 1.

Hi @adorableagnes, the member who alerted us of this blue light system sent us this today! She said that usually, the blue light is on in the top right corner, but she went to Woolies early this morning so there mustn't have been any online orders yet. This is what she said in her email:

"I walked up and down a few aisles, but couldn't see any blue lights this morning.
I don't know if they'd completed their online orders, I don't know if they turn the lights on when they are ready to collect the stock for the orders ....I don't have a clue.
So, I thought I'd take a photo of the tags, which clearly display the little unlit dot in the top right hand corner on each tag."

Also, you can clearly see it's taken at Woolies because the Woolies logo is on every price tag! Very cool, isn't it?

Hey everyone! Another update on this story, member Jenny who tipped us off on this story sent in more image proof! Please see the images below...

The image on your left shows the light gone after she collected the biscuits and deleted them from her little "calculator" device she had in her hand.

The middle image shows a little blue light on the far right bottom shelf tag.

And the far right image shows a blue light on the tag under the biscuits the worker took.

The order in which this happens is:
1. Blue light appears
2. Worker collects the item with the blue light using their calculator / electronic device that tells them where the product is
3. The blue light turns off once the product is collected by the worker and "ticked off" as collected on their calculator / electronic device!
