The First Coles Supermarket
Today’s ‘Yesterday’s Australia’ takes us back to a significant moment in 1960 when the first Coles supermarket opened in the Melbourne suburb of North Balwyn. Coles’ visionary plan was to create a chain of supermarkets that would revolutionise shopping, stocking everything a family might need in a single trip, from light bulbs to lemons. By 1973, Coles had supermarkets in every capital city in Australia. The first Coles supermarket marked the start of a transformation, making Coles a major player in the food industry. Do you have fond memories of going to Coles in the 1960s?
