The best days to refuel your car could save you a whopping $800 each year!

Today, we have a surprising tip from the experts that could save you up to $800 per year—simply by choosing the right day to fill your tank with petrol!

Not all days are created equal when it comes to petrol prices. Take it from us; they're more like kangaroos, leaping up and down often in slightly erratic, unpredictable cycles.

These price variations result from retailers' pricing policies, and they vary significantly based on your location.

However, with the right approach, you can take advantage of these fluctuations to save substantial money.

By leveraging local knowledge and adopting savvy habits, you can pounce on the best deals and bolster your savings.

Western Australia has the lovely distinction of having a somewhat regular price cycle. In Perth, prices currently experience a hike on Wednesdays. It follows a predictable cycle with reliable, regular, and short fluctuations.

To save money, heed the advice of FuelWatch’s Manager Ben Derecki: fill up your tank on a Monday or Tuesday before prices soar.

Ben said, ‘This doesn’t mean all fuel retailers will be cheap on that day, but most are.’

By following this wise trick, you could have saved up to $450 this year so far and potentially over $800 for the year if the trend continues.

However, it's essential to note that not all retailers follow the same pricing pattern.

While major retailers usually adjust their prices per the state's cycle, some operate independently.

So, Perth folks, tracking the price cycle is a good foundation, but pairing this with real-time price information on the FuelWatch website can help you strike gold with your savings!

For Sydney residents, the fuel price cycle resembles a boomerang, taking about six weeks to return to its starting point, but it can sometimes last longer, as evidenced by the surprising 73-day cycle recorded in Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) data.

Based on the FuelCheck data from the last 365 days, Saturdays are the days when fuel is cheapest on average, while Tuesdays are the most expensive on average.

While not as precise, using the state's FuelCheck app can help you navigate these cycles and save between $600 to $800 per year.

Adelaide residents face shorter but challenging fuel price cycles. To tackle this, the myRAA app can help you stay informed about fuel prices, compare them, and make informed decisions to save on fuel expenses.

By comparing petrol prices and monitoring historical trend lines, app users have successfully cracked the code, saving an average of $337.20 annually.

Melbourne residents, while your petrol prices may seem unpredictable, there's still hope!

Julia Hunter of Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) shared, ‘Trends for fuel prices are difficult to predict and will depend on a range of factors, such as levels of competition in different suburbs, wholesale prices and taxes, and other factors.’

She recommends using the Fuel Finder in the free arevo by RACV app to find the best price each time you fill up. By following her advice, you could save almost $300 annually.

For Queensland residents, we understand that price cycles can change frequently, with significant variations from region to region.

In Southeast Queensland, the fuel market operates on a price cycle that typically lasts five to seven weeks.

During the cycle, it's common for unleaded fuel prices at individual retailers to fluctuate by around 40 cents per litre between the cheapest and most expensive stages.

To make the most of these price fluctuations, it is recommended that motorists fill up their tanks during the cheap phase of the cycle and only top up with enough fuel to get by during the expensive phase.

To navigate through this maze, the RACQ Fair Fuel Finder App could be your North Star, guiding you towards the best deals.

Key Takeaways
  • Depending on location, Aussie motorists can potentially save up to $800 annually by observing local petrol price cycles and strategically filling up their tanks.
  • The petrol price cycle varies greatly across different states in Australia, with Perth's weekly cycle being the most predictable.
  • Experts recommend using apps that offer real-time tracking and show local historical fuel prices to maximise annual petrol savings.
  • Major retailers are usually more likely to follow state price cycles, but others function independently.

Keeping track of fuel price cycles can be challenging, like manoeuvring a pogo stick.

However, with patience, strategy, and smart use of technology, we can master our local fuel cycles and achieve significant annual savings.

Imagine saving up to $800—that could be the trip to the Gold Coast you've been longing for or a delightful fine dining experience. Life with a full tank is great, but having a fuller wallet is even better!

Members, have you tried following any of these strategies, and if so, did you notice any positive results in your fuel expenses?

The fuel app does all the work for you.

We have one of the cheapest petrol stations very close to us here in Perth so 2 minutes to go and top up on a Tuesday. Very fortunate and in the middle of the day not banked up out onto the road.

Same I have the choice of 2 but the loses

The servo I go to has had unleaded for $1.65 for the last 6 months it hasn't varied. Other servos in Wagga range from $1.72 to $1.89 the price only varies depending on owners greed.

A friend in SA put me onto an app a few years ago which seems to work in all states. It's called PETROLSPY. It is updated by the public which makes it more reliable that some of the other apps in this article. It not only allows you to look for the specific fuel you need, but notes the last time it was updated. You can search by suburb, supplier or by fuel type, and it even allows you to be be guided to an unfamiliar fuel supplier via a Google Map link in. You can adjust the display size to make it easier to use and it can show the current price trend for the capital cities. I find this app a terrific help when out and about regardless of where I travel. I can choose to wait until I get somewhere to fill up cheaper if I want, or fill up asap.
I RECOMMEND EVERYONE DOWNLOAD PETROLSPY TO YOUR PHONE.

We have petrol ap on our phones & usually top up when needed or going shopping past the outlet.

Still couldn't do without the ap though.

Hasn't anybody ever noticed that petrol companies can do whatever the hell they like, without regard to an imagined "price cycle"? Isn't it an absolute that prices regularly go up just a day or so before a holiday break without regard to how the highs and lows of pump prices differ on a number-of-days cycle?
Why should the prices vary? The tankers still come in and the fuel still gets distilled and stored and sent to the stations when their stocks run low. The only "competition" between the fuel companies is to see which one can change their prices the fastest.
And the government won't act because they can't be seen to be interfering in how private companies run their businesses. We won't mention, of course, the obscene amount of money that pours into government coffers through the taxes levied on the cost of fuel, will we?

I'm originally from the UK where this never happens except for an increase in oil prices across Europe and the war in Ukraine.

However, I still find it odd that the price can go up and down here when they feel like it and just telling everyone it's a "price cycle" and it's just allowed to happen. The ACCC don't seem to do anything about anything!!🙄
A few weeks ago E10 near me suddenly went up from$1.71 to $2 and recently went down again to $1.85 and now $1.83. With my discount from Origin and Woolies it's another 8c a litre cheaper, so I'm not really that bothered and when I convert it to UK currency it's much cheaper. 🙂

The current price for 95 petrol near me is currently $1.97-2.15. Where I used to live (UK) it's currently equivalent to $2.69. I don't know their E10 price.

I've got Petrol Spy and also a good app called FuelMap. You keep a logbook on there of all the fuel you buy and after a while it gives you lots of stats about your fuel economy when you've been driving between buying petrol.
