'The Australian way' is a hit! Guess which Coles product is gaining popularity in Southeast Asia
Have you ever been shopping overseas and seen an unexpected product while browsing the shelves?
Recently, a shopper revealed that some Aussie products are available in their home country, marketed by a sign saying ‘explore the Australian way’.
The shopper surprised Aussies by sharing a photo of Coles products while visiting an upscale supermarket in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The shows Coles’ Hot Chocolate, sold for $5 AUD in Jaya Grocer.
The post's caption on social media said, ‘Drinking chocolates isn't a thing in our part of the world. We do have Milo but they are way different from the Milo you guys have in Australia.’
‘The supermarkets in Singapore have them, too (I live in both countries), but they are even pricier, at around $6.70 AUD each.’ the shopper added.
A user commented on the post: ‘It is great to see Australian products in international markets.’
‘Honestly, one of the better hot chocolates out there,’ another comment read.
Other users also weighed in on the subject, sharing that the Australian products were hitting their shelves.
‘I’ve seen this in a Singapore supermarket! A whole “Australian food” section with Coles brand items, Tim tams and Vegemite’, one customer said.
Another person shared: ‘This is not the only home brand product I've seen sold at a premium overseas. What is a barebones product for Australians (e.g. Coles milk) is seen as a good quality product overseas (particularly in Asia).’
So what’s the story behind this?
Coles' General Manager of Exports and Fresh Food, Will Mulholland, said Coles has been exporting high-quality Australian products for 25 years to more than 40 markets.
'Our products are available to West Malaysian consumers exclusively through supermarket brand Jaya Grocer and online delivery platform GrabMart,' Mulholland explained.
'Currently, Jaya Grocer stocks around 200 Coles brands and Coles drinking chocolate is one of the top 10 best-selling Coles products for Jaya Grocer in Malaysia,' he added.
Coles has also announced a major Malaysian expansion, breaking into the previously untapped East Malaysian market for the first time.
This expansion, enabled through a partnership with the premium local grocer, Everrise, will result in more than 150 Coles own-brand products, including drinking chocolate, hitting East Malaysian shelves over the coming months.
It’s exciting news for Coles and Aussies, as rival supermarket Woolworths opted to wind down its export business, Woolworths International, earlier this year due to a shaky Covid-19 recovery, supply chain disruptions, and the Ukraine war.
