Terrifying 'riot' breaks out at Woolworths supermarket in Darwin–police ARREST one teenager

Rioting is a scary thing to witness. It's even scarier when it's unfolding right in front of you.

Several witnesses have come forward after a shocking clip of a 'riot' involving a group of at least 10 people at a Woolworths store in Darwin recently made the rounds on social media.

In the video, the group rushes towards the aisles and checkout area of the store, with one man jumping over the counter of a coffee establishment as he armed himself with a knife.

The store alarms can also be heard ringing during the altercation, alerting the shoppers to stay away from the scene.

Witnesses claimed that one man was even wielding a machete during the incident.

'As I was closing the roller doors [to the adjacent pharmacy] people from outside were trying to run into the pharmacy for their own safety, they were really fearful for their lives,' said witness Claire Ross who described the incident as a 'scary' experience.

'One of the gentlemen with a red wine bottle went to fling it at people and I was hoping he wouldn’t fling it at us.'

One of Ms Ross' employees was said to be returning from a nearby bin when the altercation started.

She continued: 'It was scary, there were a lot of people that were really distraught. They were just panicked and fearful.'

'He [the staff member said] "I just couldn’t believe it, there was a guy with two knives running at me and I thought I was going to die".'

According to the Northern Territory Police, the event took place on the afternoon of July 27 at half past four, confirming that a teenager was detained as a result and described the brawl as 'appalling behaviour'.

James O'Brien, superintendent of the NT Police, described the brawl as 'extremely frightening,' saying: 'We’re looking at at least 10 people walking around, there were at least two people that may have been armed with knives, that’s clearly seen on all the footage.'

'What is very clear from the CCTV is that it was some type of disagreement between two groups of people… and it is very lucky it didn’t spill over into the general public.'

'It’s appalling behaviour – absolutely appalling – and we do not expect that in our Darwin CBD, let alone anywhere else in the NT.'

A Woolworths representative confirmed that staff members at the Darwin City store were unharmed from the altercation, emphasising that the company prioritises the 'safety of our team members and customers'.

'Our Darwin City store team responded calmly and quickly to the unfolding incident.'

'Police were called and we continue to assist them with their inquiries.'

It is understood that Woolworths is providing team members who saw the incident with access to counselling services. The store keeps operating as usual.

It is indeed scary. I was at a local shopping centre buying some groceries when two youths started to walk out carrying goods without paying. They were approached by the security man (who was not a young man). They dropped the goods but then attacked the security man and threw him to the ground. Another customer said "I have rung the police!" and the two youths took off. I was stunned! This sort of thing should not happen.

I can’t believe the police said things like this don’t happen in the NT. Are Tennant Creek, Alice Springs and Yuendumu no longer in the NT? These riots and gang fighting are almost every day occurrences in these and many other places in the NT.

These riots will never stop, because the police are so sick and tired of arresting these louts, only to see the courts let them go back on the street, with little or no consequences. The louts know that it’s odds on they won’t be incarcerated, so they behave as they like.
