The tranquillity of a routine afternoon was shattered in Sydney's southwest last week when a teenage driver's alleged reckless actions led to a catastrophic event that has left a community reeling and two families forever changed.

The incident, which occurred on Old Glenfield Rd in Glenfield, has sparked a conversation about road safety and the responsibilities that come with being behind the wheel.

At approximately 5 pm last Tuesday, 12 November, emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of a collision.

Terrifying footage emerged, showing the 18-year-old driver purportedly ignoring a red light and ploughing into a 72-year-old grandmother and her four-year-old granddaughter as they were about to cross the road.

The male driver of the red sedan involved in the incident was taken to Liverpool Hospital.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Campbelltown Local Court on 17 December.
