Tech Talk with Dr Al: …And Then There Was Light! The Benefits of LED Lights

Note from the Editor:
This article was kindly written for the SDC by member Alan G.

We live in a fairly modern (2010) home, and all the fittings are pretty well up-to-date – including the lights. However, there were several of those lights that were getting a little ‘past it’, and these were the CFL, or ‘Fluorescent’ lights.

You might ask why I wanted to replace these lights with the latest Light Emitting Diode (LED) type. It’s simple, really. LED lights are more efficient (they use less energy) – another way of saying they are much brighter for a lower wattage - they last longer than earlier types, and they are ‘instantly on’. For me, it was a no-brainer.

Are you thinking of switching to LED lights? Here are some things to consider.

Have not converted to led lights. Part of the reason is we have some beautiful chandeliers, and glass light shades made at the Phillips lighting factory that used to be in the Newcastle area in our home. Don’t think they will quite go with led lighting. When we installed fan lights in our home years ago we didn’t put one in our bedroom. The reason, we have a Plaster ceiling decoration over our light socket painted with yellow roses by my late sister, we have a light shade with yellow roses on it and we have bedside lights with yellow roses on them, bought in 1974 shortly after we were married. We did not want to lose any of these items. We also have ceiling decorations in our other 3 bedrooms, our lounge room and dining room all with the designs painted by my late sister. Lounge and dining rooms have chandeliers, spare bedrooms have ceiling fans with lights but the painted designs can still be seen on them. We do use led light bulbs wherever we can.
