Supermarket's new gate-keeping: Why your membership card scanning matters more than ever

Australian shoppers have grown accustomed to flashing membership cards at warehouse entrances, but those days are rapidly disappearing. Costco is installing scanners at all of the retailer's stores to discourage non-members from shopping at its warehouse clubs, and the change has significant implications for how we'll shop moving forward.

The membership-only giant has been implementing scanning devices at entrance points across all locations, with the technology now arriving at their Marsden Park store in NSW.

But this isn't just about streamlining entry—it's part of a comprehensive strategy to tackle mounting security concerns that many retailers are facing.

Why the sudden security upgrade?

Store managers report that people have been entering stores to shoplift, grabbing items and running out, sometimes in groups that overwhelm staff and security.

The new scanning system creates an additional barrier that helps verify legitimate customers before they enter the shopping floor.

The scanners also prevent non-members from using cards belonging to friends or family members, as Costco cracks down on membership sharing while implementing technological updates.

With 79.6 million paying members globally as of May 2025, protecting the exclusivity of membership benefits has become increasingly important for the retailer.

How the new system works

The process itself is straightforward. Shoppers scan their physical membership cards or use the digital version through the Costco app at self-service kiosks positioned at store entrances.

Staff members monitor these stations to verify memberships and direct anyone with lapsed memberships to the service desk for renewal.

Members may need to show valid identification if their membership card doesn't include a photo, though this appears to vary by location.

The entire process typically takes just seconds for active members.

For those whose memberships have expired, renewal can be completed at the service desk, through the Costco app, or via their website. This eliminates the disappointment of discovering an expired membership only after filling your trolley.

What this means for senior shoppers

While the technology might initially seem daunting, the new system actually offers several advantages for older Australians.

The self-scanning stations are designed to be user-friendly, with large screens and clear instructions. Staff remain nearby to assist anyone who needs help navigating the technology.

Perhaps more significantly, the enhanced security measures should create a calmer, more controlled shopping environment. Fewer non-members wandering the aisles means reduced crowding and a more predictable shopping experience.

Current Costco membership costs in Australia

Gold Star Membership: $65 annually (increased from $60 in September 2024)

Executive Membership: $130 annually (up from $120)

Executive members receive 2 per cent cashback on qualifying purchases, with the annual limit increased to $1,250

Delivery options expand for convenience

For seniors who find warehouse shopping physically challenging, Costco's February 2025 partnership with DoorDash offers home delivery from participating stores.

While non-members can use this service, they pay higher prices than members, making the membership fee worthwhile for regular users.

The delivery service excludes bulky items like large televisions and appliances, but covers most grocery and household essentials. This could be particularly valuable for seniors with mobility limitations or those who prefer shopping from home.

Costco continues Australian expansion

The retailer opened its newest Australian location in Ardeer, Melbourne, in 2025, with plans for a Pakenham outlet in 2027. This expansion demonstrates Costco's confidence in the Australian market, even as they tighten membership controls.

The Christmas shopping season is already underway at Costco, with their 2025 festive range now available. This includes decorations, gift hampers, and their popular catering platters, which can be ordered online with 48 hours' notice—perfect for holiday entertaining without the stress.

Navigating the new entry system

  • Have your membership card or phone ready before reaching the scanner

  • Ask staff for help if you're uncomfortable with the technology

  • Consider the Costco app for digital membership access

  • Check your membership expiry date before shopping

  • Explore delivery options if warehouse shopping becomes difficult

Is membership still worth it?

With membership fees recently increasing, it's worth evaluating whether Costco membership remains good value, particularly for households on fixed incomes. The $65 Gold Star membership pays for itself relatively quickly for most regular shoppers, especially those who take advantage of Costco's petrol stations, pharmacy services, and bulk buying opportunities.

Executive membership holders benefit from the 2 per cent cashback program, which now offers up to $1,250 annually in rewards—a significant increase that can make the higher membership fee worthwhile for frequent shoppers.

The scanning system rollout represents broader changes in retail security, with many membership-based retailers implementing similar measures. While change can feel uncomfortable, these systems ultimately aim to protect the benefits that paying members expect and deserve.
