We typically only see superheroes on the big screen or in comics. However, this Melbourne Dad’s bravery is nothing short of super!
Stewart Brasier was on a seemingly normal holiday in Queensland. He had just cracked open a cold one at the Airbnb he was staying in until he heard a commotion outside. The father-of-two sprung into action by immediately climbing over the back fence and, lo and behold, a nightmarish scene of two young girls screaming as their beloved puppy ‘Panda’ was on the verge of being killed by a huge snake.
The girl’s mother was on the phone with Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers who shared the incident on Wednesday.
“There was no way that a snake catcher could get there in time so I had to talk her and the neighbour through how to get the snake off the dog as quickly and safely as possible…” the Melbourne dad says.
“They were able to uncoil the snake from around the dog's body and then separate them and save the dog's life. The snake was also unharmed as well,”
Brasier had to seize the snake by its head to pull it away from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy. He then carefully placed the snake in a pillowcase as an additional safety measure before the snake catcher arrived to collect the massive reptile.
“The dog was totally screeching. All you could see was a little bit of the dog's midsection…” he told The Sunshine Coast Daily.
'I'm wrestling with it and I'm yelling out to my mother-in-law to put a beer in the freezer because I'm going to need one after this, it was horrendous.'
The super dad urges pet owners to keep an eye out on their fur babies when they are outside. He says the snake was ‘just looking for food’ and although an incident like this is rare, it might still happen.
The National Pesticide Information Centre says we can also take several precautions to prevent snake problems. They advised people to remove food sources (such as dog food) lying around and to pack them in tight containers instead. They also recommend building a snake-proof fence if the other methods of keeping snakes out fail.
In the end, the family sent Mr Brasier a gift basket as a way to show their gratitude. Move over, Superman! This super dad is the real modern day hero that we need.
