Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac takes a light-hearted jab at Robert Irwin - 'Take that!'

Sam Mac, one of the faces of the breakfast TV show Sunrise, and Robert Irwin have engaged in friendly but spirited competition for some time now, each jokingly vying for the other's job.

It may be hard to believe but amongst all their differences, the two get along quite well! In fact, Robert apparently told Sam a few times that he finds him to be quite 'hilarious'.

Recently, Sam was in the middle of filming for Brekky Central at Taronga Zoo when he made an offhand comment about the beloved wildlife warrior.

In the segment, Sam can be seen gently holding Smudge, a baby echidna that is only 43 days old.

'Smudge is a baby echidna, only 43 days old. You can actually see the spikes starting to form there as well,' he explained.

'And apparently, he loves it if you give him a little belly rub.'

Smudge was then shown to be enjoying the belly rub as the weatherman used his index finger to pat the little echidna. When Sam saw how much the little echidna was enjoying it, he became unable to hide how pleased he was.

'Take that, Robert Irwin!' the breakfast TV host joked. Perhaps there’s a life wildlife whisperer in Australia?!

What exactly did Robert do for Sam to feel the need to make that kind of joke? Well, Robert filled in for Sam as 'a guest weatherman' for one week, back in July.

After Robert made the announcement, he told the show's hosts that he wouldn't want to see Sam getting too 'comfortable', prompting the TV presenter to say that he was going to try and retrieve his spot back!

When asked by the show's hosts what he would do in his week as the weather host, Robert responded, 'All I can say is: Sam Mac, I'm coming for ya! I'm excited, it's going to be good fun, guys!'

During his time at Sunrise, Robert also talked about the fact that he has a passion for photography, just like his dad. In fact, Robert has won the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice Award back in 2021 with a drone image of a raging Cape York bushfire.

'People don't realise my dad was an incredibly passionate photographer,' said Robert, revealing that his father, the late Steve Irwin, had an affinity for photography.
