Stopping for a cuppa on the way to town

Who remembers stopping for a cuppa during family outings back in the day? Aussie families would embark on those dusty roads leading to town, turning what might seem like a mundane shopping trip into a cherished adventure. Kids would be perched on the running board of a trusty old vehicle, which had water bags hanging off the front along with delicious home-cooked pikelets and hot drinks that seemed like permanent travel companions. Do you have fond memories of family outings and impromptu tea breaks on the road? Tell us in the comments below.

We never went on many long road trips when I was a kid but I remember the few times we did. We always stopped at a roadside stop area, which was really just an area to pull safely off the road. No toilets, so a trip into the bush at the side of the road if you needed it. Then we would wash our hands from a canvas water bag that was hanging on the front of the car, amazing how cool the water was. Out would come the food and drinks, tea for the adults from the thermos, mix up cordial or water for kids, from the canvas bag. Sandwiches and home made cake or bikkies. It was like a big adventure to us kids. The food always seemed to taste better than when we were at home. It was a constant battle to keep the flies off the food while we ate. But it was so much fun. Then we all piled back into the car and off we went again, kids fighting and squabbling in the back over who took up too much room and who was getting squashed. Poor mum and dad had to put up with so much noise.

yes can remember road trips of a weekend. Mum would have a thermos of tea packed for her and dad. I think my brother and I drank milk if I remember rightly. We stopped usually at a picnic spot and enjoyed the surroundings. We also had packed sandwiches for lunch. They were fun times and we got to see many rural towns
