Stop cleaning this way! You might be making your mould problem far worse without realising it

Mould is a common household problem that can be a real headache for homeowners. It poses health hazards, and mould removal services could also cost thousands of dollars.

This is why some people try to solve this issue through do-it-yourself (DIY) methods. But did you know that a common cleaning method could actually worsen your mould problem?

Barbara O’Neill, a practitioner of alternative medicine, has revealed in a video that ‘When you kill mould with bleach, you're feeding fungus, which means that's your next crop of mould.’

So, what's the alternative?

O’Neill suggested a simple, cost-effective solution that you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard—white vinegar.

'The good news is white vinegar kills mould—and won't kill you,' she said.

'If you have any mould in your house, go and spray it with vinegar and quickly leave the room. You only need to come back in ten minutes, and it will be dead, and then you can wipe it up.'

However, O’Neill also stresses the importance of addressing the root cause of the mould problem.

This could involve contacting a plumber or builder to investigate potential issues such as a ‘leaking tap in the wall’.

‘Does the guttering need to be cleaned out? Do you need to chop down a few trees and get that sunshine into the house?’ she said.

'We should have no exposure to mould, zero exposure.’

The video gained around 1.4 million views in just a few days, with people flocking to the comments section and sharing their thoughts.

‘White distilled vinegar is slept on. Its ability to clean is underrated,’ one commenter said.

‘Try a dehumidifier,’ another advised.

‘I did not know this!! Thank you,’ responded a third.

‘I wish I knew this before I cleaned my walls with bleach,’ another added.

In addition to vinegar, there are other household items that can be used to tackle mould.

Hydrogen peroxide, for example, can be sprayed onto the affected area and left to work its magic for ten minutes before being scrubbed away.

A cleaning expert also shared her trick on how to address the mould problem by using bicarb soda. You can learn about it here.

According to a 2022 study conducted at the Queensland University of Technology, perceived emerging health effects following exposure to dampness and mould extends beyond accepted health associations such as respiratory symptoms, asthma and infections to that of a chronic multiple-symptom presentation.

This is why it’s crucial to address your mould situation the proper and safe way!
