Stereogram
This ad from the Sydney Daily Mirror (August 22, 1963) shows off the General Electric Portable Stereogram — yours for just 79 guineas (that’s around $160 back then)! It promised “astonishing sound” and came with detachable twin speakers, treble and bass controls, and even fold-down legs for easy portability.
It was marketed as a “party to party” machine — move it from the lounge to the backyard and you had music wherever you went. Many Aussies will remember similar models like the PYE Black Box, which became a household favourite for vinyl lovers.
Do you remember having one of these in your home? Or maybe your parents’ living room was never without one spinning The Beatles or Elvis? Share your memories of your first stereogram below!
