Star-Shaped Sand Granules
This photograph of amazing sand from the Great Barrier Reef was sent in by dear member Meryl G., who was once an avid diver:
'The site where I saw them is called “Sandbox”. The granules can have various points, as you will see from my photo, which I took using a very simple, unsophisticated underwater camera in a waterproof housing,' Meryl said.
'I took the photo because the current was washing the sand in a way which caused interesting ridges to form.'
'I did notice that the grains of sand looked coarser than normal, but it wasn’t until I saw the photos that I realised what I had been fortunate enough to photograph.
'I miss diving a lot but feel that at over eighty, I should not worry a dive instructor by his/ her having an old lady in the group.
'Actually, when I was frequently diving, I spent quite a lot of time under the boat fossicking around whilst waiting for the rest of the dive group to equalise, etc., before going off on a dive or doing similar things at the end of dives when some people ran low on air, and we had to take them back to the boat.'
What a wonderful photograph, Meryl G.! Who knew the night sky wasn't the only place you could see stars?
