Social media trend sparks unexpected supermarket shortage: 'Are we joking?'

Food trends come and go, often turning everyday ingredients into unexpected sensations.

One simple dairy product has recently captured widespread attention, disappearing from shelves and leaving shoppers wondering what sparked the sudden craze.

As demand surges, many are left searching for alternatives or hoping for restocks.

What is the culprit behind this sudden scarcity? A recipe that's taken social media by storm.

Thanks to social media influencers like Michael Finch and Danielle Mitchell, the Hot Honey Sweet Potato Beef Bowl has become a must-try and is causing quite a stir in the dairy section.

Tina Provis, known from the latest season of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!, recently shared her frustration on social media.

Like many others, she found the cottage cheese section barren after gathering all the other ingredients for the popular sweet potato beef bowl.

'Are we joking? Have we really sold out cottage cheese over this?' she lamented.

And Tina isn't alone in her cottage cheese conundrum. Social media is abuzz with similar tales of woe.

One shopper humorously blamed Michael Finch after visiting three supermarkets in vain, while another expressed annoyance for those using cottage cheese regularly before it became a social media sensation.

Some have even embarked on epic quests, spanning five supermarkets, to secure this suddenly precious commodity.

Supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths have acknowledged the phenomenon.

A Coles spokesperson reassured customers that while cottage cheese has been flying off the shelves, the situation is improving.

'Our suppliers have been working hard to keep up with this increase in demand,' they said, adding that more tubs should appear on shelves as the health-conscious eating trend continues to grow.

Woolworths echoed this sentiment, noting the increased demand for high protein, low-fat options and the influence of social media on customers' buying habits.

They, too, are working with suppliers to ensure better availability for their customers.

But cottage cheese isn't the only victim of widespread recipe fame.

Mingle's taco seasoning has also become a hot commodity, with Jordyn Evans, founder of Mingle Seasoning, reporting a significant spike in sales.

'Since this trend has taken off last week, Mingle has had its best week ever in supermarkets,' Evans said, highlighting the power of social media to drive immediate consumer action.

It's not just the taco seasoning that's felt the impact. Mingle's recipe bases and Everything Bagel Seasoning have also seen increased popularity thanks to popular meal prep content and salad trends.

So, what can you do if you're caught in the cottage cheese crisis or the seasoning shortage?

First, don't panic. Supermarkets are aware of the issue and are actively working to restock.

In the meantime, consider this an opportunity to explore alternative recipes or substitute ingredients.

Who knows, you might stumble upon your next favourite dish.

And for those feeling adventurous, why not try making your cottage cheese home?

It's a simple process that involves curdling milk with an acid like lemon juice or vinegar and can be pretty rewarding.
