The pain of missing loved ones never goes away, especially if they've left us too soon. At that time, all that one can do is cherish their memories and strive to keep their legacies alive.
That's exactly what legendary singer-songwriter Sir Rod Stewart found himself doing last week, as he said goodbye to one of his brothers at a funeral in London.
The knighted music legend took to social media to express his grief after losing two of his brothers in consecutive months. Hundreds of fans have joined in expressing their sorrow and sharing their condolences.
Mr Stewart posted pictures of his beloved brothers, Bob and Don, alongside heartfelt messages of appreciation for their lives on his social media account a few days ago.
‘I said farewell to my brother Bob today, with his coffin draped in a Rangers flag (life-long Glasgow Rangers fan),’ he wrote in his post.
The singer added: ‘We loved our game days up in Scotland together. Now he joins [my] brother Don. Rest in peace, boys. Two of my best mates are gone within just a few months.’
Mr Stewart, the youngest of his five siblings, lost his eldest brother Don in September 2022, around the same time as Queen Elizabeth II’s passing. Two of his sisters, Mary and Peggy, are still alive.
‘It has been a devastating 48 hours. We lost my brother Don on Tuesday at 94 and today we have all lost Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at 96,’ he wrote in an Instagram post at the time and uploaded an illustration of the late queen’s crown in response to her passing.
Sir Rod Stewart, ranked as one of Billboard’s top 100 artists of all time, was presented with the Knight Bachelor by Her Majesty in 2016.
The ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy’ singer has always been vocal about his brothers’ contribution and support in whatever he did, whether it was football or ‘washing his dirty underpants’. He added that his eldest siblings were ‘instrumental’ in his entry into the music industry.
‘I’ve got to tell you, these guys were instrumental in supporting me, helping me get into music, and just being there for me,’ he told reporters during his sister Mary’s 90th birthday in 2019.
Various studies of siblings have highlighted the importance of sibling relationships for growth, particularly in terms of learning how to relate to others, developing social skills, and the positive influence of a positive, caring sibling relationship regarding career choices and success.
That support and sense of love and security can be a powerful force to drive success, as seen in the case of Sir Rod Stewart. While family support is often understated, it can provide much-needed encouragement, resources, and belief in one’s potential — all of which are essential for achieving success.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Sir Rod Stewart and all his family in this time of grief.
