Shopper shares ‘apocalyptic’ scenes at Woolworths

Step into the unexpected as we explore the strange happenings at a Woolworths store, leaving shoppers puzzled and amazed.

This supermarket saga, caught on camera, reveals a series of peculiar events that have sparked conversation and curiosity.

However, the real reason might have you switching from scratching your head to nodding it.

The shopper filmed these unusual scenes and shared them on social media, describing her experience as nothing short of 'apocalyptic'.

As she surveyed the half-lit aisles and wrapped-up produce sections, she couldn't help but feel a sense of dystopian unease.

'To say it's been a strange few days is an understatement,' she said.

As she would come to understand, the bizarre scene was the outcome of a storm-induced power blackout.

'So, currently in Woolies, there's a power outage, and obviously you can't have cold food items because of your food safety issue,' she narrated in her video.

‘But there's been a power outage before our storm for over two hours, I don’t understand.’

‘This is apocalyptic, kind of—not even the veggies, can’t even have the veggies mate! I mean, there’s nothing wrong with veggies!’ she continued.

Woolworths reportedly has a protocol in place for blackouts in-store precisely to avert potential spoilage.

The strategy involves relocating 'high risk' items such as chicken and other meats—that could go off easily—into cool rooms.

Plastic sheeting is used to cover other chilled areas with items that could easily spoil, like cheese, fruits, and vegetables, to help retain the cold temperature.

While it may look unusual, this measure is essential to uphold food safety as any prolonged exposure to room temperature could easily ruin perishable goods.

Customers are unable to purchase these products during this time—frequent opening of the plastic covering could disrupt the carefully managed temperature and spoil all the stock.

So the next time you wander into an eerily shadowed supermarket, don't fret!

It's probably just the team doing their bit to ensure you're getting the freshest possible produce once the lights come back on!

Recent storms have caused power outages like this in some parts of Australia, affecting thousands of households and establishments like Woolworths and Coles.

Another widespread power outage also happened in Victoria where around half a million were affected, prompting an inquiry by the state government.
Key Takeaways
  • A Woolworths customer was left stunned by the sight of supermarket sections wrapped in black plastic following a power outage.
  • The shopper posted footage on social media showing the extraordinary measures taken to protect chilled foods and produce from spoiling.
  • Woolworths staff moved 'high risk' foods to cool rooms and covered other chilled areas with black plastic to maintain the temperature for food safety reasons.
  • Due to the operational process to minimise food spoilage, customers were temporarily unable to purchase certain products during the blackout.

Not sure this is news worthy .

@sdc how about an article of Sam Kerr's arrest so we can show our support to her.

Now that would be an article of importance.

Ridiculous how she was arrested 1 year after the so called racial slur. What the police officer just realised who she was and thought they would make some noise.

I definitely agree with her slur now

A multi billion $ supermarket can't afford generators?? What a bunch of fits.

Foodland supermarkets, Lobethal Bakery, OTR, and a number of other businesses here in SA have installed back up generators for that very purpose.

Just remember, ALL of SA had a 3 day power outage because of storms that brought down major power lines and towers back in 2016.

Sorry to tell you but Sam Kerr isn't at all important. What does she do except play useless sport??? She hasn't exactly found the cure for cancer or anything else worthwhile has she?? She just plays with a ball.

Surely they cannot sell anything during a power outage as the registers are not able to be used. So why let people go in at all. I also think as meat is one of the main items shop lifted it would be prudent to seal off that section as the cameras are also affected

I'm a true believer that Shops that have Cold or Freezer areas should have backup generator installed for these areas that cut in if the main power goes out, then they cut in and then switch back to main's when the power comes back on (after a 3 to 5 min delay). Problem solved over massive loss of stock.

She should not have used a colour when she was angry. Here in NSW we have a footballer using the word monkey and is in all sorts of trouble. Why? Surely it’s not a racial animal? What if he called him a possum?

Taking food from a refrigerator during a power outage to place in a cool room would only put cool room temp up. Unless the cool room has a generator. Unrefrigerated food should be discarded after 2hours if the temp is above 5degrees. I don't see how a bit of plastic would maintain the cold, it may stop access to it.

Hardly ‘apocalyptic’, not really a newsworthy story.
As for supermarkets having backup generators. This is not really an option. Can you imagine the cost and upkeep of the systems involved nationwide.
The consumer would bear the extra cost in the prices paid at the checkout.
Maybe a hire generator would suit individual supermarkets if the power supply was affected for more than a day or two.

Hi, surely this news item is not a place to make comments about Sam Kerr.
It's about power outages in supermarkets.
As for Sam Kerr, she is just a sports person with some talent. No different from anybody else.
Let the legal system of the country she is in deal with what happened.
You weren't there so only have a self-opinion on the details.
Would help if you kept your comments relative to the subject of the topic.
Just saying.

I know he plays for the roosters who we follow .
To be honest even that was blown out of proportion. My son knows him and he isn't a racist.

Maybe I need to stop calling my grandson a little monkey

In reply, what's the point in having a story / topic about power outages in supermarkets if comments go off the topic??
Example: Irrelevant comments about a sports person in a reply about power outages in supermarkets.
You can make as many comments as you like and have as many opinions as you like but keep it relevant to the subject of the news item.
I have many opinions on many subjects.
But I do not air my grievances on world peace, the environment ect, in a format about power outages in supermarkets.
Maybe you should keep to the subject of the news item.
