Whether or not you’re into gardening, incorporating a few potted plants into a home can really freshen up a space. But besides using it to boost a room’s aesthetic, there’s just something about plants that’s rewarding and makes most of us feel at peace. It’s no surprise why several people love filling up their homes or offices with lush green leaves. However, like everything else, the cost of bagging a luscious plant home rises the more scarce it gets. The rarer it is, the higher the value.

A plant shop owner, Elsie Bishop, has taken to Tiktok to share a one-in-a-million find. She unexpectedly got her hands on variegated Monstera Deliciosa for way less than its usual price that can go up to $1,500.
Recently starting her own plant business, Green Envy, Elsie was merely shopping for stock and shared that she happily brought home a $30 Monstera Deliciosa. Eventually, the plant expert discovered that the leaves had variegated markings on it which is a very rare genetic deformity heavily valued by plant collectors.
Variegated Monsteras are well-known house plants that are scarcely found in Australia. The main factor behind why these species are more expensive than most plants is because many of these variegated cultivators can’t be grown from seeds and are either made in the lab or are tediously grown as cuttings from a mutated mother plant.
They are a handful to take care of and are much more delicate than the average Monstera Deliciosa. Therefore, making distribution and shipping much more complicated! This means they are usually only sought after by avid fans of gardening and special plant collectors.
In some cases, variegation can happen naturally with a couple of leaves but there’s no assurance that it will develop completely.
“Because it (the variegation) has occurred naturally, there's not a 100 percent chance that the variegation will continue on any new leaves that grow but it's exciting to take the risk…” Elsie told FEMAIL “The coloured spots on the leaves are variegation. You know it's stable when the coloured streaks are going up the stem as well.”

Elsie also shared that she recently sold a variegated Monstera for $1500 but that she wants to keep this one instead as a part of her own collection.
Her video has amassed over 168K viewers and 13.8K likes in just a few days. Her story attracted hundreds of comments from ecstatic plant lovers that are equally excited about her unbelievable stroke of luck.
“I literally check every time I go there soooo lucky!” one user wrote.
“Oh so your god’s favourite I see?” another teased.
She encouraged fellow plant fanatics to always keep an eye out in case there might be any more rare finds at their local Bunnings.
