Secret savings trick revealed in your everyday Officeworks receipt!

Many of us here are, unfortunately, no strangers to the rising cost of living in Australia. Due to the pandemic and other economic ups and downs, many of us are increasingly driven to find ways to save and reduce our spending.

Thankfully, there are a number of savvy savings tricks out there, many of which we can take advantage of without having to break too much of a sweat.

One of the most accessible and lesser-known tricks? Making the most of price-matching policies offered by some of the major retail stores here!

A recent find by an eagle-eyed shopper this week demonstrated thepotential savings that could be unlocked using these policies.

The shopper, who went to Officeworks in pursuit of the 9th Generation 64GB iPad, documented the whole process on a Facebook group for bargain hunters, along with a picture of her receipt.

It turns out that the store's Price Beat Guarantee applied to her purchase, meaning that Officeworks dropped the original $499 asking price down to $423.70—a whopping 5 per cent cheaper than Amazon's offer of $446 for the same model.

What's more, another group member was also able to get in on the deal by following the lead, as she reported the purchase only cost her $401.85 in the end.

So, what is the Officeworks Price Beat Guarantee? According to their website, Officeworks guarantees to beat any current competitor's price by 5 per cent, including discounts offered by online stores, as long as the products are identical and in stock.

Here's how it works: First, you need to document the price difference. You can do this by clipping a catalogue, taking a screenshot on your phone, or saving the webpage.. Once you have proof, let Officeworks know! You can either give them a call or visit your nearest Officeworks store and provide them with evidence of the lower price.

If your claim is approved, Officeworks will give you 5 per cent off the matched price, and you'll leave the store satisfied!

When other members of the Facebook group heard about this trick, they, too, reported their findings from other retailers, all of which had similar policies in operation.

Bunnings and Chemist Warehouse offer 10 per cent savings if a competitor's price beats theirs, while The Good Guys will offer up to $50 in-store credit.

Supercheap Auto, meanwhile, goes the extra mile by also granting a 14-day price guarantee for the items you purchase from them. Costco, Retravision, Dan Murphy's and Harvey Norman also have similar policies for online shoppers.

Harvey Norman customers get a 7-day price guarantee, while Costco members can get the difference credited if a product drops in price within 30 days of purchase.

Key Takeaways

  • An Officeworks customer revealed how she accessed a substantial discount on an iPad by taking advantage of the retailer's price-beating policy.
  • The policy guarantees to beat a competitor's price by 5 per cent, even if that competitor is an online retailer, such as Amazon.
  • Other Australian retailers also offer similar price match or beat policies, including Bunnings, Harvey Norman, Retravision, Supercheap Auto, Costco, Chemist Warehouse and Dan Murphy's.
  • The ease of obtaining these discounts through different policies varies, with conditions ranging from price match within a specified number of days after purchase, to automatic credits for price drops on purchased items.

Members, these are just some of the easy-to-use savings tricks out there, and you can take advantage of them quite a bit if you keep an eye out for them.

At the end of the day, remember: it's completely understandable to make a purchase to meet your needs, but there's no need to break the bank if you are willing to do your research. So, what do you think? If you come across any other price-matching tricks out there, please do share them in the comments and help other members out.

Happy shopping, everyone!

It is great that you mention places that will price match, but I have checked out prices from different places and The Good Guys who were once matching the prices told me a few times over the past three or four years we do but not with that company. So it would be a good idea to also check if they do guarantee to match before you purchase.

Officeworks is only cheap when they have specials or sell their own brand. Their own brand Keji A4 copy paper is only 70gsm, Australian standard is 80gsm. Their other brand is J Burrows and again, these are when the price is good. Marbig/Artline/Esselte/Avery - not good prices. My recent experience was a wallet of 4 Stabilo Boss Highlighters, O/w price $9.98, rule of thumb $1.00 each for a named highlighter and $1.00 for the plastic wallet = $5.00 (sell price should be $4.95). I only noticed this when I got home and was going to use them and I also looked at the receipt. Yes I took them back and was asked if I had just changed mind, my answer was no I didnt change my mind I just refuse to pay such a horrible price. I also asked the young man who served me to get some one to price check the item. It gets better, our local small newsagent was the place I bought the replacement pack for yes, $4.95. If you think about it, O/w purchases in bulk X 10 and sure they have overheads but come on.

Totally agree one needs to shop around for good prices. Officeworks is fantastic for Flybuys though, if you want to redeem your $.

Thats why we have a consumer watchdog. Unless their receipt or policy is clearly stating their policy about not honoring every exemption then they must abide by the rules.
