SDC Members React to Controversial ‘Outlaw Santa’ Inflatable
- Replies 5
Last week, we wrote about a new Christmas decoration being sold at Bunnings that stirred up a bit of controversy. Missed it? You can read the full story here.
Now, you all had a lot of thoughts about the situation, and I’ve compiled a few below.
But first, here’s a reminder of Bunnings' Outlaw Santa ($119) inflatable, which bears an uncanny resemblance to Australian bushranger Ned Kelly.
Some of the following comments are a little cheeky; you’ve been warned!
Now, let’s hear from a few SDC members.
Some saw the appeal of the unusual inflatable decoration.
Member @maxesmum said: ‘I like him! I wouldn’t buy him, but I like him!’ And for $119, we can understand why!
Member @Gsr added: ‘I like it, might buy one. Christmas has changed so much, even in my lifetime. It has become very commercialised; it is more about who can outdo who.’
Member @Littleboy8 said: ‘I hated it at first, but it sort of grows on you.’
On the other side of the argument, some members of the SDC were against the decoration.
Member @Simplelife said: ‘Not a fan. While Ned Kelly is a historical Aussie figure, maybe not one we should be so proud of. I do like the idea of Aussie Christmas decorations, but what about Santa on a kangaroo?’
Member @Judith1946 said: ‘Celebrating a murderer is obscene.’
Member @magpie1 said: ‘Ned Kelly was an outlaw, a Bushranger and a murderer who was justifiably hanged in the Old Melbourne Gaol. So I can't begin to imagine what he has to do with Christmas and its true celebration… You can do better Bunnings.’
Some were in the magnanimous middle.
Member @siameezer said: ‘People have too much time on their hands if they are going to find offence in everything. If you don't like it, then don't buy it... simple. These are the same whingers who complain about a lack of Aussie-themed Christmas decorations. How about embracing the spirit of Xmas by being kind and helpful to others instead of finding fault around every corner?’
Member @Margaret H Jackson said: ‘It never ceases to amaze me how some people get so offended over the smallest little thing. If you don't like something, you don't have to buy it; leave it at that, for goodness sake.’
And to end on a great quote, member @Baz1960 added: ‘As Ricky Gervais has said, “You may find it offensive! But I find it funny! That's why I'm happier than you."’
