SDC members react to ALDI's 'overnight' price surge

We recently wrote about ALDI’s recent salmon price surge from $13.99 to $17.99, and the community had a lot of thoughts on the matter. We’re here today to share some of those comments to highlight the voices of Australian seniors.

Member @mylittletibbies said: ‘City people seem to have no idea regarding the fluctuations in prices of fresh food such as fish and meat. Fuel is a very large cost for fishermen. Has anyone noticed how much it has gone up? You can't expect prices to stay the same.’

They continued, ‘Some years they have good catches, some bad. Same with meat prices and farmers' cattle, sheep, etc., all have to be transported from the farm to market, then to the slaughter yards, then after packaging to the stores with each individual person passing on their price rises. And yet people expect the stores to keep their prices the same.’

‘I tried a fish van just recently, $84 kg for flake. I think I'll stick with ALDI.’

Member @Denny-Dear added: ‘I just can't believe that ALDI achieved being named Australia's favourite supermarket for the sixth consecutive year in Canstar's highly regarded Supermarket Satisfaction Awards. Here in Port Pirie, South Australia, our ALDI is cheaper on selective items for a few weeks, and then they price the item to be one cent cheaper than the competition. Yes, they can still maintain that they are cheaper, but we are not stupid. One item that sticks and makes my blood boil is Salada crackers, which were forty cents cheaper than the competition. Now they are one cent cheaper, Cadbury chocolate is six dollars, and ALDI is five dollars ninety-nine. Yes, while they still are the cheapest, but one cent on popular items? Give me a break.’

Member @Isis said: ‘I have noticed price rises. It's still cheaper than the big two, though. Honestly, folks, we can’t expect prices to stay the same if they are buying at a higher price. I am just grateful to get the goods I want cheaper, even by a small amount. If I like salmon [but] too big a hike, I can’t afford it, so don’t buy it. Even seafood shops have upped the cost.
For the moment, still with ALDI.’

Member @Dennis shared: ‘I know shopping for one is different to family shopping, but I have an exercise book where I keep the price of anything I buy from ALDI. My cleaning lady also does my shopping. When she returns, I check the docket against my exercise book to see if there has been any increase in prices. Up to now, I find there have been no price increases in the last four months on my regular purchases.’

Now that’s an impressive amount of attention to detail, member @Dennis!

Member @PeeBo said: ‘I backed off from using ALDI a few months ago. I have to travel 67 kilometres to get there. With the price of fuel, I ended up spending more.’

Member @Montym said: ‘The glass is half full! ALDI didn't start charging like a wounded bull at the same time as the other big two did. Eventually, they had to increase their prices.’

Member @Currawongsong added: ‘[It’s] Not only ALDI, they are the last of the big 3 to increase salmon prices.

What do you think? Which products have increased in price at your local supermarket, and how has your budget changed as a result?

And the Tasmanian farmed Salmon is not safe to eat anyway because of all the additives they put in the fish meal they feed to them
