Scam purporting to be from the ATO

They are at it again!! The notice below arrived in my email inbox today. It makes no sense. What “tax records” for 1 April to 30 June 2025 need reviewing, especially when we haven’t yet reached 30 June 2025.

The big give-away is that there is no identifying information, no taxpayer name, no tax file number - nothing. What on earth is that reference number?? ATO-Q2-2025-[ID]. Laughable!

The phone number has been revealed on the internet as a scam number being used for fraudulent Centrelink communications. It looks like it is now being used for fraudulent ATO communications. It is used to trick people into revealing sensitive information used for scamming.

This is the code relating to the link 'Update Tax Records' above.

<a href=http://future-production-653a.up.railway.app/6880a0b41cd7a4b3/yJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9 target=_blank class="link link--external" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">Update Tax Records</a>

I've cut it short as the address references a data base of some sort.

All we see is the end bit 'Update Tax Records', but the code after <a href= is the main culprit which we don't see. It states a web address http:// blah blah and I don't think the ATO has a railway in it. To keep this short the next bit 'target=', 'rel=' is what it does if the link is clicked and then the last bit is what you see.

The other down side is web sites use the same code and have the same result, BUT...
Run your mouse pointer over the link and look down (bottom left) and you should see the address of the link (not always the case but it can help navigate the sites).

I hope this helps with the reason, don't click on links from Government emails, what you see is not necessarily what you get.
