Scam email asking for gift cards

This week I received an email from a friend’s email address saying that she had laryngitis and could not call but wanted to ask my advice about something. I did not reply immediately as it didn’t look like something she would send. A few days later, I heard from my friend saying someone had hacked her Telstra account (she has now changed the password) and send out scam emails in her name. Today I received the scam email from the same address, reprinted below, asking for a gift card to help a “friend’s daughter” who is sick. You can see the keying errors and other mistakes in the message. Beware of this scam. If you think you have received an email from a friend asking for monetary help, call them direct. Then take pleasure in deleting the emails from these disgusting scammers.

Good to know. Thanks. Plus, people need to check the message for their sender's unfamiliar/quirky email address. Example:- yesterday, I received another myGov email with the sender's address being deputy_lacks1809. Nothing compared to legit government correspondence. You can check the email sender's address before you click on it.

I received a similar one via messenger. A friends account had been hacked. Not only did I come to close to falling for it (because the content of the message rang true) but my friend is now having all sorts of trouble reinstating her social media accounts. A shame these people don't use their talents to do some good rather than prey on people.

I ignore all emails from people I don't know, if it was from a friend and I though it was suss I would either call or text them to find out what was going on. I love getting the texts that tell me I have 3 days to pay my toll.....I don't own a car let alone drive LOL

I have been getting some allegedly from my internet provider on indentical letter head, ABN and email address. saying that my payment didn't work - about a fortnight later than it was paid.
The company has now issued an official statement that they are aware of it and taking steps to prevent it.
