Scam alert: Couple loses $30,000; Bank's response disappoints

In an age where we should be enjoying the fruits of our labour and the peace of mind that comes with financial security, scams targeting seniors are on the rise, leaving many in our community feeling vulnerable and exposed.

The story of Rod and Mary, a couple well-known in the Australian comedy scene, is a stark reminder of the cunning tactics scammers employ and the unexpected responses victims might face from institutions that are supposed to protect them.

Rod Quantock and Mary Kenneally, a Victorian couple who have brought laughter to many through their live theatre and television work, recently fell prey to a sophisticated bank scam that cost them a staggering $30,000.

‘I could hear Rod in the back room talking to someone on the phone... for a long time,’ Ms Kenneally stated.

‘Rod sounded very serious. A little bit alarming.’

The scammer, posing as a representative from their financial institution, Bendigo Bank, convinced Rod to transfer the funds to a new account to prevent a supposed hack.

Unfortunately, the scammer controlled the account, which was with HSBC.

The day after the fraudulent transaction, Rod, still under the influence of anaesthetic from a cardiac procedure, and Mary contacted their local Bendigo Bank branch and were informed they had been scammed.

Bendigo Bank acted swiftly to alert HSBC, which restricted the scam account, but it was too late by then. Less than $3,000 of their $30,000 could be recovered.

When Mary contacted HSBC to track down the remainder of their funds, she was met with a response that left them both stunned.

HSBC refused to take further action, citing customer privacy concerns.

‘They refused to do anything as they could not "invade their customer’s privacy,"' she said.’ she stated.

The couple's plight has since gained media attention, and following this, they were promised total compensation for their loss.

However, the ordeal has highlighted a significant issue within the banking industry's response to fraud, especially when protecting the elderly and vulnerable.

‘Why couldn’t our bank reverse the transaction? Or put a time delay on unusual payments?’ she asked.

An HSBC spokeswoman has stated that protecting customers from criminals is critical and that the bank and the industry are doing everything possible to combat scammers.

‘While there is always more work to be done when combating scammers, HSBC, together with the industry, has been doing everything it can to protect customers,’ she explained.

Mr Quantock and Ms Kenneally are a well-known couple in Australian comedy.

They collaborated on the 80's sketch comedy series Australia You're Standing In It.

In related news, a group of HSBC Australia customers lost $1.25 million to a bank impersonation scam.

The scammers used spoofing to send texts or make calls that appeared to come from HSBC, requesting personal details and bank codes. Read more about it here.

Again, it's painful to read of a vulnerable person (this time suffering the after effects of anaesthetic from a cardiac procedure) being taking in by the bad guys, when a lot of us, in a fully aware state, would have got our partner to phone the bank and check before acting on the transfer. That, or just hang up and then report because to phone like this this is not the way a bank normally behaves.

The vulnerability of the innocent person involved is the most obvious thing in the article, One of many about scammers. Most victims should be more aware given the level of reporting of such events. This case is different.

So in an after event situation of attempting recovery of the stolen funds HSBC is not the only bank to complain about restrictions imposed by the Privacy Act. Westpac recently said the same thing at before a senate committee. So the government know about some of the issues regarding getting the money back and now need to act accordingly to fix the unintended consequences of the Privacy Act.

The circumstances of vulnerable people needs to be taken into account by the authorities. It's called inclusion. No reason why, given the rate of events, that Privacy Act amendments should not be pushed through government.

The victim had just had surgery and was probably not aware of his actions. As for the commonwealth bank they allowed a $2500 payment to an overseas account then charged me for recouping the money

l was very gullible and taken in when l applied for a new British birth certificate on line. The U.K site looked genuine so l filled in all the necessary details. l was taken back by the $325.36 fee but thought that because it was to be authenticated and equally by the 20 day time it would take to reach me. l waited three weeks and nothing so l got on the phone with my son and phoned up the U.K Birth Deaths and Marriages department and spoke to a guy with a real English accent and he said we had been scammed. He said the fee was only 20 pounds and would take five days. He also said he knew about this site and agreed that it looked real , We were given a phone number to ring but haven't rang it yet.We spoke with NAB bank where the money was taken from and was told l would probably get the money back. So beware you just can't trust any site and don't loose your birth certificate.

We got scammed for $700, rang bank (Bendigo Bank) quickly, they did nothing, rang the scammers bank, they said to tell our bank to do certain things, again nothing, dont think they were interested at all, so we lose! Not happy at all with the response from Bendigo Bank.

Sorry to hear that. lt is a big shock and l hope you recover from it,

I was ready to bag rod quantock for being a gullible dick but circumstances being what they are,I can’t entirely blame him. And Bendigo bank are horrible, horrible people to deal with! i banked with them when they were sandhurst trustees, then Bendigo credit union, then Bendigo bank. My account was so old it was only 3 digits! When I had issues 40 years later with loans and insurances they didn’t lift a finger….so I took me and my savings elsewhere and I’ve never been happier. My huge extended family followed my lead and also dumped them. They’re renowned for not helping when they’re really needed.

Bankers are bastards and that is the end of it. They are slowly compelling us to use plastic cards and simply want to get rid cash. They minimise staff to save money. They are getting rid of a very secure form of payment, the paper cheques, secure because it can be stopped by the payer by fax, or by email or even by telephone.

Don't blame those who have scammed for being stupid. The entire banking system now enables scammers to do as they please and with little possibility of retribution.

Very hard to pick this sort of scam I reckon. Where you go looking for a service and not the other way around. I too would be cross at myself if it happened to me, however the website looked genuine to the experts so I'm not sure what you could do here given all you wanted was just a birth certificate. Simple enough one would think.

Yeah, maybe the cost was unsettling, but everything costs a lot more these days. It's easy after the event to think I should have known better, but, this was a tough one to pick. Thanks for sharing and I'm sorry for your loss Ebby and hope you get the money back as indicated.

C'mon! If you choose to reveal Passwords or specific Personal details, how can it be anyone else's problem but yours.

Vote with your feet

I don't.Which is why I neither pay bills sent though the internet and am most reluctant to use the internet to buy anything. The only security is to not use the internet or plastic cards.

Why are these people named? We do not need to know they are so called celebrities. A warning is good enough

How many times do people need to be told that if a so called bank calls you, tell them you'll call back direct on the number you know is correct. There's 99.9% chance it will be a scammer. Personally my banks has never called me and I don't expect they ever will.

Why is it the banks fault that you handed over personal details.
The bank is not responsible for your stupidity!
