Say goodbye to dirty grout with these tips and tricks from a pro!

Grout is the unsung hero of your home, filling the cracks between tiles and providing a durable and stunning finish. But let's be real, grout can also be a pain.

This sneaky little material is porous, meaning it's the perfect breeding ground for stains, mould, and mildew. And if that wasn't enough, keeping grout spotless is a whole other battle.

Cleaning grout regularly is necessary, but it's also a tedious and labour-intensive task. With so many other home maintenance tasks to tackle, grout can feel like a never-ending source of frustration and hassle.

But don't give up just yet! With the right tools and tips, you can make grout your new best friend and enjoy a beautiful and streak-free finish in your home.

Maintaining good grout hygiene doesn't have to be too difficult; a little elbow grease and a few handy tips from the experts will have your tiles looking fresh and germ-free in no time.

Jacques Courtin, the Founder and Managing Director of balcony and bathroom leak repair specialist Megasealed, has shared his tips with us and passed along a few useful pieces of advice when it comes to grout cleaning.

When it comes to grout cleaning, Courtin has got you covered! According to the expert, it's a simple and affordable task that requires nothing more than a trusty bottle of dish soap. That's right, this gentle yet effective product, paired with a little elbow grease, will keep your grout looking spick and span.

Prevention is key, and with a daily squeegee session (a quick squeegee of the shower walls) after your shower and a weekly deep clean (either steam cleaning or using a specialised grout cleaning product), you can keep grout cleaning from becoming a monster job. Just imagine, never having to dread cleaning grout again!

When it comes to dingy grout, Courtin has some insider tips. He warns against using harsh chlorine bleach on yellowed or greyed grout, as this could spell disaster for your once pristine tiles. Instead, reach for hydrogen peroxide or oxygen bleach, but use it with caution.

A gentle and effective solution for reviving your grout is to mix a diluted non-chlorinated bleach solution. But be warned, frequent use of bleach can weaken the grout structure, making it brittle and prone to deterioration. And never, ever apply bleach to natural stone tiles!

To avoid discolouration and stubborn stains, Courtin recommends keeping up with a regular grout cleaning routine. And if all else fails, it may be time to consider resealing your grout. So go ahead, give your tiles a little TLC and say goodbye to dingy grout for good!

According to Courtin, the number one problem he sees as a leak professional is people neglecting their grout maintenance.

Grout is like a sponge, soaking up all the dirt, grime, and water that it encounters. If you don't take care of it, it can lead to cracks, leaks, and a whole bunch of nasty mould and mildew, says the cleaning expert.

So, how do we keep our grout in tip-top shape? Courtin has a simple solution: reseal it once a year. You can do this yourself (check out this link from Bunnings to know how) or you can call for a professional.

But how do we know if it's time for a reseal? Easy! Just do a water test.

Spray a little bit of water on your grout and see what happens. If the water beads on top, your grout is still in good shape. But if the water seeps in, it's time to reseal and avoid any leaks or mouldy surprises.

Sometimes, the wisest decision you can make for your home is to call in the big guns. When DIY grout jobs go awry or you spot a leak, it's time to call in the experts.

Let's face it, not all of us were born with a trowel in hand and the talent for grout. And when it comes to leak repairs, you don't want to make the problem worse.

But it's not just leaks that call for professional help. If your grout is looking worse for wear, with cracks or missing pieces, it's a sign of erosion that needs attention from a licensed pro. And if you're dealing with persistent or excessive mould, it's a major health hazard that requires immediate professional intervention.

So call in the experts! Your family's health and your home's well-being are worth it.
