Beauty and skincare are not just about looking good but also about feeling good and maintaining personal hygiene.

But when we are constantly bombarded with new products and beauty tricks, it can be hard to know what truly works.

However, a beauty social media personality claimed to have found a 'life-saving' hygiene trick that could replace the need for deodorant.

Elle McNamara, known by her online moniker 'Bambi Does Beauty', shares her various beauty tips, skincare routines, and product recommendations on social media.

This time, she shared a surprising trick that involves using a face wash as a deodorant substitute.

In a video online, McNamara held up a bottle of PanOxyl Benzyl Peroxide Acne Creamy Wash, a retail product for around $23.

‘Personal hygiene tip 101, if you use this on your underarms, you won't even need to wear deodorant,' she said.

‘Leave it on for a few minutes, kind of like a mask, and then wash off.’

'It kills the bacteria that causes your sweat to smell.’

McNamara recommended using the Acne Creamy Wash that contains four per cent benzoyl peroxide rather than the 10 per cent version.

She explained that this is the exact percentage needed for the underarms.

However, she also warned that benzoyl peroxide can leave stains, so it's best to use a washcloth that you don't mind getting dirty.

Benzoyl peroxide is an over-the-counter topical medication used to treat acne. It kills bacteria, including the one that causes acne, both on the surface of your skin and inside your hair follicles.

But is there any truth to this unconventional trick?

According to Dr Tiffany Libby, a dermatologist who works with the brand, the product can help with odour.

‘PanOxyl contains the active ingredient, benzyl peroxide, which helps eliminate odour-causing bacteria,' Dr Libby said.

'Apply the wash to the under arms in the shower and leave on for several minutes before washing off.’

To ‘keep odour-causing bacteria under control’, the product should be applied three to four times weekly.

Dr Navin S. Arora, a dermatologist at Borealis Dermatology, agreed with Dr Libby's sentiments.

'Benzoyl peroxide works by killing acne-causing bacteria, which are similar to the ones that can cause body odour,' Dr Arora said.

'This makes it a possible unconventional method for addressing body odour issues, especially for those looking to avoid aluminium-based deodorants.’

'However, it's important to note that deodorants and antiperspirants work by making the skin acidic to deter bacteria or by reducing sweat production, which is a different mechanism of action from benzoyl peroxide,’ he added.

Dr Arora also warned that PanOxyl can cause side effects, including skin irritation, itching, burning, stinging, redness, swelling, and peeling.

He advised people with very sensitive skin to be cautious and to apply a 'test dose' to check for reactions before regular use.

The product should not be used on open wounds, sunburned, windburned, dry, irritated skin, or areas of eczema.

‘Given these considerations, while PanOxyl may help reduce bacteria and potentially body odour, it's crucial to weigh the benefits against the potential risks and side effects, especially considering it's not specifically designed as a deodorant,’ Dr Arora concluded.

Despite these warnings, many of McNamara's followers have reported positive experiences with the PanOxyl trick.

'Been doing this for about three months and glycolic acid, my underarms HAVE NO SMELL. Like none,' one person wrote.

Another agreed, 'She's not lying, everyone. The best advice ever.'

'It works! Except I still have to use deodorant, but I can go the whole day and a half without odour. Before it was the same day,' someone else chimed in.

Some have even claimed that it has helped with body acne.

'PanOxyl is also the best thing for body acne if anyone struggles with that,' one shared.

Another added, 'It's true, I use the body bar instead. I feel like it works better.'
