Save big bucks this Christmas with these supermarket discounts!

The festive season is upon us, and with it comes the joy of gift-giving, family gatherings, and, of course, the delicious Christmas feast.

However, the holiday season can also bring financial stress, with the cost of food, gifts, and decorations quickly adding up.

But fear not! Here is the inside scoop on how to save big on your Christmas grocery shopping.

In a recent social media post, one thrifty shopper suggested a daring strategy: waiting until Christmas Eve to purchase food for the big day.

This approach requires flexibility and quick thinking, as you'll need to plan your meal based on what's in stock and marked down.

While it might sound like a high-stakes game of supermarket roulette, it could also lead to exciting culinary adventures and significant savings.

But if the thought of leaving your Christmas dinner to chance sends shivers down your spine, don't worry.

Supermarket Sleuths’ Jo Abi did some detective work and spoke to major supermarkets about their Christmas food prices, markdown schedules, and which products will give you the most value for your money.

Please note that the prices indicated below are accurate as of writing and are subject to change without prior notice. Links have been added where applicable.

Woolworths

Woolworths is already in the midst of their markdown season.

According to Woolworths Chief Commercial Officer Paul Harker, ‘The festive season is here, and we know this is the time customers are in the final stretch planning for the big day.’

‘Now is a great time to pick up pantry essentials rather than waiting to do one big shop in the few days before Christmas.’

Their markdowns roll out each week, with new deals released every Wednesday.

‘We want to help our customers spend less this season, so we're reminding them that we have more than 6,000 weekly specials each week, as well as our Prices Dropped and Low Price programs so they can find great value to help their budgets go further this Christmas,’ Harker added.

This week, customers can expect to find Australian Pork Leg Boneless Roast for $7.50 per kilo, Woolworths COOK Chicken Drumsticks with Sweet & Smokey BBQ Glaze for $8 per pack, Ingham's Christmas Turkey Nuggets for $5 and Fresh Cherries for $15.90 per kilo. Plus, all Bon Bons and Christmas lights are 30 per cent off.

IGA

IGA announces its price matches each week and tends to meet competitors' prices.

However, as each IGA is independently owned, prices can vary from store to store.

As of posting, Abi said you'll find Cadbury Favourites for $8, Seven Mile Premium ham or IGA Picnic Shoulder ham for $11 per kg, and Ingham's Turkey Thigh Roast for $15 each.

You can find your nearest IGA and check their stock here.

ALDI

ALDI is known for offering the lowest prices overall for products, although their markdowns also vary from store to store.

According to an ALDI spokesperson, the supermarket ‘will not be beaten on the cost of your weekly shop, and that extends to our 2023 Christmas offering’.

‘Last year alone, we saved ALDI customers $3.1 billion at the checkout, and we remain committed to providing shoppers with the best Christmas essentials at the best prices day in, day out, in the lead up to December 25.’

This week, you can find Festival Selection Australian Half Leg Ham for $7.99 per kg, Whole Frozen Turkey for $7.89 per kg, and the Antipasto Grazing Board Platter for $14.99.

Coles

Coles also releases its markdowns weekly, and with Christmas just around the corner, there are plenty of deals to be had.

Despite the markdowns being on a store-by-store basis, an insider suggested the best time to score big savings is after Christmas Day.

As of writing, you can find Pavlova for $6 each, Australian Cooked Black Tiger Prawns for $30 per kg, and the Finest Luxury Jewelled Fruit Cake for $12.50.

Costco

Costco is a great option for those hosting large gatherings, with plenty of savings on food. This week, you'll find Kirkland Signature Prawn Platter for $76.99, Kestrel potatoes for $8.99 for a 5kg bag, and Kirkland Signature Rotisserie Chicken for $6.99.

Remember, prices and availability can vary depending on location, so it's always a good idea to check your local store for the best deals.

To sum it up, here is the list of the items you can save on your next Christmas grocery shopping:
