Sad news for LIFT fans: Lemony drink might soon face the axe

Lift has always been one of our go-to choices whenever we're in the mood for a lemony-zingy soft drink.

However, rumours have recently surfaced that the popular drink, which has been around since the 70s, might be facing the axe soon…

According to Russ, a foodie who goes by the handle Russ Eats on social media, Coca-Cola might soon be removing Lift from supermarket shelves nationwide.

Okay, maybe not completely removing but the company might be replacing Lift with a 'reformulated' version, which may also come out under a different name and branding.

'Lift is being put down, sent to the junk food graveyard. It's to be replaced by Sprite Lemon, which I find a bit confusing,' he said.

For a long time now, Lift has been an option for Aussies who don't like Solo or Kirks.

But with these recent speculations, it looks like Coca-Cola is slowly 'absorbing' and moving the brand into its more popular Sprite range.

Russ mentioned that the newer version of Lift would include caffeine, which, we can only assume, will make people even less interested in it. (Caffeine in your lemon soda?) Plus, this makes Lift less child-friendly!

He added that ever since Solo had been 'killing' Lift in sales, this is Coca-Cola's counter move, that is why they're planning to offer a similar product under the Sprite label.

The announcement was met with indifference from plenty of users in the comments section, with many of them saying that they prefered other soft drink brands anyway.

'Lift changed their recipe a while back to be made with a sugar alternative, they were probably trying to save it then,' one person wrote, with a second one agreeing and adding, 'Lift switched to a really tangy mix, which killed it for me.'

A third user said, 'Can't ever beat Solo though, which is why no one bought Lift. It's a good idea that they're putting it under the Sprite label.'

There were others who, on the other hand, found the news disappointing.

'So sad; I love the tangy lemon flavour of Lift,' said one user.

'Lift will be gone,' a second user wrote along with a sad text emoji.

Even though Lift is still available on Woolworths and Coles' websites, it has been reported that a number of stores are gradually taking the beverage off the shelves.

Coca-Cola Australia has also been reached out to for a comment on the future of Lift; however, the company has not yet issued a statement on the matter.

However, the company's media team said, 'We don't have anything to share right now but we're always evolving our product portfolio to provide more of what people want. Stay tuned!'

What are your thoughts, folks? Are you big fans of the drink? Or would you rather see it changed into something different? Let us know in the comments below!
