Rising to the occasion: Aussie bakery kneads its way to top with award-winning finger bun

In one Aussie city, a local bakery has risen to national fame, proving that sometimes the simplest pleasures can be the most rewarding.

The bakery has recently gained recognition for one of its exceptional items, winning a prestigious award that celebrates uniquely Australian culinary delights.

This accolade highlights the bakery's commitment to quality and innovation, making it a standout in the competitive food industry.

The Humble Bakery, with its cosy outlets nestled in Surry Hills and Circular Quay, has just kneaded its way to the top, winning Wotif’s 2024 Uniquely Aussie Award for the best finger bun in Australia.

This accolade is a testament to the bakery's dedication to crafting a truly exceptional version of this beloved Australian classic.

For those who may not be familiar, the finger bun is a quintessential Australian snack. It's a sweet bread roll, typically topped with a generous layer of icing and, for the lucky ones, a sprinkle of colourful hundreds and thousands.

It's a treat that has graced the shelves of many bakeries across the country, including household names like Baker’s Delight and Brumby’s.

But what sets the Humble Bakery's finger bun apart from the rest?

The bakery's co-owner, Ben Milgate, shared the secret behind their award-winning creation.

‘It’s great to see that our take on this nostalgic treat is loved enough to win,’ he remarked.

According to him, the success of the bakery’s finger buns is due to both the high quality of the ingredients and a modification to the recipe.

‘Our frosting is made with cream cheese, which sets us apart from most other finger buns that use Boston icing,’ he explained.

‘And of course, they’re made fresh daily with soft, sweet milk dough and have a slab of butter inside.’

Milgate noted that finger buns occupy a ‘special place’ in Australian culture.

‘Aussies love finger buns because they’re iconic and bring back childhood memories,’ he said.

‘They’re simple and satisfying—perfect for a quick treat or a bit of nostalgia.’

Categories such as Australia's best sausage roll, best surf club, and best lookout were among those voted on by over 1,000 people for Wotif’s Uniquely Aussie Awards.

Wotif travel expert Rebecca Hurley explained that the awards aim to showcase Australia’s ‘unique gems’.

‘The awards show Aussies are eager to share their local travel favourites,’ she said.

‘It is the classic sausage roll which caused the most debate, earning the title of the most voted category by Aussies.’
