Riddle​

A carpenter went to fit a door, but the door was too big. He cut some off and it was too small, so he cut some more off and it fitted.

OK, I'll try.
"He cut some off and it was too small"
I guess the piece he cut off was too small to fit the frame.
So, he cut another bit off and the door was then the right size to fit the frame.

That's the best I can come up with.
