Revealed: How one Woolworths shopper saved $200 on seafood

Saving money isn’t always easy when shopping at large supermarkets, considering the monkey (or maybe koalas?) Aussies can’t ever seem to get off their backs: high cost-of-living pressures.

So it’s often quite a relief when shoppers come across some great discount deals!

Recently, a Woolies customer from the Riverina Region of New South Wales was delighted to save big on a rarely discounted food item, which she excitedly revealed on the Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook page.

The woman was able to purchase 25 packets of smoked salmon and trout, from brands such as Superior Gold, Tassal and Ocean Blue, for just a fraction of their original prices at $1.10 - $3.77 per pack.

The shopper proudly shared that she had spent a grand total of $50 on items that had a combined value of $250!

Naturally, fellow bargain hunters wanted to know how she managed to get such an incredible deal.

The answer? Good ol’ timing.

‘Everything was purchased at my local Woolies at only 20 minutes to closing time. I don't live in the big city, so I grab what I can when I can,’ she said.

Late last November, Woolworths confirmed that they apply reduced prices on some food items to minimise food wastage.

At the time, one alleged employee said that markdowns usually happened at night for meat and dairy items depending on the expiration dates logged in their records.

‘It tells you how much to mark it down by and prints the labels. More often than not, if you want cheaper stuff, go in around 7 pm and there will be some,’ they shared.

A second alleged employee added that Woolies usually applies its first markdowns for chilled products starting at 2 pm, especially for items expiring in a day or two.

‘Percentage off is generated by stock on hand and how many days out,’ they said.

‘Usually, between 6 pm and 8 pm for same day sale, a further markdown can be applied, at our discretion up to 80 per cent.'

Going back to our very lucky salmon and trout hauling shopper, many were puzzled as to what she planned to do with so many bought in one go. (‘Eat it. What else?!’ some of you would probably utter — to which we say ‘Fair enough.’)

Kidding aside, the woman said her haul will last a long time in the freezer and will be used in a wide variety of dishes.

‘I can make SO MANY MEALS from this!’ she stressed. ‘Honestly, there are so many things you can make with fish.’

‘I've even used smoked fish as a bacon replacement in recipes too,’ she explained, adding that pasta, potato bake, and pies were among her likely dishes to cook.

Salmon and trout can also be cooked in red curry, stir-fried noodles, and the classic garlic-butter combo.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, frozen fish is best used anywhere from 3 to 8 months after storage.

The shopper wasn’t alone in her good luck, however, as another customer also discovered the incredible deal on smoked salmon. That shopper managed to pick up $100 worth of salmon for just $10 from their local Coles store!

Coles earlier said that there were no fixed times when shoppers could be sure to find discounted buys.

‘Markdowns do not uniformly take place at the same time across all stores. There are many things that can impact when this takes place including stock on hand, delivery schedules and team member rostering,’ a spokesperson said.

It’s no secret that smoked salmon and trout can be very good for you — both are packed full of essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that are necessary for a balanced diet. Smoked salmon and trout also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which can help to improve heart health. They’re also low in calories and a great source of protein. Salmon, in particular, also contains a powerful antioxidant called astaxanthin which some studies have linked to the expression of an anti-ageing gene in the body.

Overall, smoked salmon and trout can be a nutritious addition to any diet, but it’s important to do your research and check the nutritional content of your chosen product before purchasing.
