Remembering the lives of NRL legend Terry Hill (52) and Battlestar Galactica actor Terry Carter (95)

The Australian rugby league community is grappling with the sudden and tragic loss of one of its most cherished figures.

Terry Hill, a former New South Wales and Australian centre, has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 52.

Reports indicate that Hill suffered a heart attack while in the Philippines, leaving fans and former teammates in a state of shock and mourning.

Terry Hill's illustrious career in the National Rugby League (NRL) spanned over 15 years, from 1990 to 2005, during which he played 246 first-grade games.

His journey through the league saw him don the jerseys of Souths, Easts, Wests, Manly, and the Wests Tigers.

Known for his vibrant personality both on and off the field, Hill's impact on the game was profound, and his legacy will be remembered for generations to come.

As a player, Hill was renowned for his skill and tenacity, representing NSW 15 times and donning the Australian jersey on eight occasions.

His contributions to the Manly Sea Eagles were particularly significant, as he was a key member of the 1996 premiership team.

Manly CEO Tony Mestrov paid homage to Hill, stating, 'Terry was a much-loved and respected figure not only at the Sea Eagles but across rugby league, where he played for several clubs.’

‘On behalf of everyone at the Sea Eagles, we offer our deepest and sincere condolences to Terry’s family and friends during this difficult time. Terry will always be fondly remembered at Manly,’ he added.

Beyond the field, Hill was a character larger than life, leaving an indelible mark on the sport during the Super League era and into the early 21st century.

His face-to-face showdown with Gorden Tallis in the 1999 State of Origin series has become the stuff of legend, and his regular appearances on Nine’s Footy Show during its peak years brought laughter and joy to countless fans.

Hill's influence extended into the legal realm as well. At just 19 years old, he challenged the NSW Rugby League in court, refusing to be drafted to Eastern Suburbs by the Roosters in the second league-wide draft in 1992.

As the face of the case, Hill, along with 126 other plaintiffs, successfully argued that the draft was a restraint of trade.

This landmark victory in the High Court is considered a pivotal moment in the growth of the Rugby League Players’ Association and has shaped the NRL as we know it today, with the draft never making a return.

After hanging up his boots in the NRL, Hill briefly switched to rugby union before transitioning to coaching league in Umina.

His passion for the game and commitment to nurturing the next generation of players were evident in his post-playing career.

The news of Hill's passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes across the NRL.

Geoff Toovey, who captained Hill in the 1996 premiership victory, remembered him as 'a great player for Manly' and 'a good friend.'

Steve Menzies, another former teammate, praised Hill as 'the ultimate team man' and 'one of the world's best centres at the peak of his career.'

Peter V’landys, the Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman, also expressed his condolences, saying, 'Terry was a prodigiously talented footballer... and one of its most popular characters, a giant personality who was universally loved by the players he played alongside over his long career in the top grade.'

Hill's impact extended beyond the rugby league field. He was in the Philippines helping to raise money for a local orphanage, demonstrating his commitment to giving back and helping those in need.

In similar news, the entertainment world has lost another of its bright stars with the passing of Terry Carter at the age of 95.

The actor, whose career spanned several decades, passed away peacefully in his New York City home on April 23, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking roles and a life rich in artistic achievement.

Carter's son, Miguel, confirmed the sad news to the media, and while the cause of death was not disclosed, it was shared that a private memorial would be held to honour the actor's memory.

For many, Terry Carter's name is synonymous with the pioneering characters he brought to life on screen.

His portrayal of Colonel Tigh in the 1978 film Battlestar Galactica and Sergeant Joe Broadhurst in the 1970 TV series McCloud are etched in the annals of television history.

Carter's journey in the industry began with a significant role as a detective named Jaffie in the 1968 TV movie Company of Killers.

His career was marked by a series of firsts, including becoming the first black actor to be a series regular on The Phil Silvers Show in 1955.

His work on the show Hamilton and other projects further cemented his status as a versatile and respected actor.

But Carter's talents were not confined to acting alone. He took a hiatus from the screen to pursue a career as a TV anchor and producer, during which he made several documentaries.

His passion for storytelling led him to found Meta-4 Productions, Inc., a small production company. There, he produced and directed more than 100 films and videos, leaving an indelible mark on documentary filmmaking.

Reflecting on his career on his website, Carter once said, 'When I began my acting career, I felt I would be content working on the stage for the rest of my life. I remember saying that if I could earn $100 a week as an actor, I would be fulfilled. Circumstance, happenstance and inflation conspired over the years to pull that dream into an unrecognisable shape.'

He attributed his success to being in the right place at the right time with the right stuff for the right people, echoing Duke Ellington's definition of 'luck.'

Terry Carter's personal life was as full as his professional one. He is survived by his wife, Etaferhu Zenebe-DeCoste, and children, Miguel and Melinda.

Having been widowed twice, he was preceded in death by his late wives, Anna DeCoste and Beate Glatved DeCoste.

Terry Hill played for my team, the Manly Sea Eagles. He was a funny bugger on the Footy Show with his greyhound Nads. The Footy Show televised Nads' races at Wentworth Park with Hill cheering his greyhound with "Go Nads....Go Nads!" What a crack up!
