Remember when knitwear was made to last? This $40 cardigan brings it all back!

Winter fashion trends often pop up where you least expect them—sometimes even in your local department store.

A new wardrobe staple is making waves online, sparking comparisons to high-end designer pieces at a fraction of the price.

What’s causing all the buzz is more than just a cosy look—it’s a viral sensation reshaping how shoppers think about budget style.

A winter wardrobe find had fashion lovers racing to their nearest Target store—and it wasn’t just for the price tag.

A cardigan from the budget retailer caused a stir online for its chic design and luxe look, with comparisons quickly drawn between the $40 Lily Loves Fluffy Button Front Cardigan and the $229 Solene Cardigan from Nadia Bartel’s fashion label, Henne.

Fans praised the cosy piece for its soft texture and flattering fit, but the buzz really took off on social media, where users styled it for everyday wear—from home office days to weekend outings.

With a cropped cut, classic crew neckline, button-up front and cuffed sleeves, the design offered more than just comfort—it brought a hint of ‘quiet luxury’ to an otherwise casual staple. The fluffy yarn and snug fit had shoppers calling it a must-have, and when it dropped in five colours and inclusive sizing from XXS to XXL, it didn’t take long before it began flying off shelves.

Social media platforms became flooded with outfit inspiration as fashion bloggers and everyday shoppers alike flaunted their finds.

‘It’s so good, and it reminds me of the Henne one but honestly it was a fraction of the price,’ one shopper said while showing off the brown version.

Another fashion lover echoed the same sentiment: ‘I plan on wearing it with jeans. So cute, I want to get the light blue one too because it’s so fluffy and comfy. Highly recommend. And also, chocolate is the colour of the season.’

Styling the cardigan with denim seemed to be the trend of choice, with another creator pairing it with matching chocolate sneakers and a coordinated handbag.

Even changeroom try-ons were making the rounds, with one user showing what the item looked like on a size 14–16, noting: ‘If you have been searching for a brown cardi, Target has you covered. It’s so soft and warm. So cute.’

Target’s General Manager of Merchandise, Carrie Kirkman, credited the brand’s global outlook and attention to emerging fashion directions.

‘Our trend and design team travel the world and are inspired by many of the trends we see in Europe and North America. This season, texture takes centre stage—from soft and fluffy yarns to “quiet luxury” classic knits,’ she shared.

She explained that the collection’s colour palette reflected international runway styles: ‘We love camels, browns and wine tones, spruce greens and soft greys.’

The goal, according to Kirkman, was to offer style without the splurge.

‘This collection offers stylish, on-trend pieces that make you feel amazing—so whatever you choose, you can be sure you’ll look and feel gorgeous,’ she said.

‘This collection is all about bringing customers “affordable luxury” and making them feel comfortable and even a little bit spoiled.’

The online response was just as glowing, with comments ranging from ‘Obsessed!’ to ‘Target is slaying sooo hard’.

Another added: ‘I need it. Going to buy this right now’.

From designer-inspired looks to real-time try-ons, Target’s viral cardigan proved that style doesn’t need a designer price tag to make an impact.

If you love a good bargain find, this isn’t the only designer ‘dupe’ winning fans over this season.
