Recipe for 'deep-fried milk' – your new favourite sweet treat!

Deep-fried milk is a popular snack throughout the world, especially in China, Spain, India, and Italy. It's now going viral in Australia, too, thanks to the video-sharing app TikTok.

If you guys have seen the finished products in the viral videos, they look absolutely mouthwatering! But, you probably might be wondering if the steps involved can be a little bit difficult to follow. After all, is it really possible to fry milk?

It turns out that it's actually quite simple and straightforward – all you need is a little planning!

The traditional sweet treat of deep-fried milk, which is also known as "leche frita" in certain regions of the world, can be prepared in just a matter of minutes. However, the 'milk' must be allowed to chill for several hours first before it can be fried.

If you are interested in making this sweet treat at home, the following is a list of the ingredients that you will need:
  • 6 cups of whole milk
  • 1 cup of cornstarch
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • Panko bread crumbs
  • Eggs
  • Vegetable oil
  • Powdered sugar
  • Sweetened condensed milk

And here's how to make it:

To begin, combine the milk, cornstarch, and sugar in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Combine them thoroughly until thick, then pour the mixture into a glass dish lined with parchment paper.

You’ll want to refrigerate the milk mixture for at least two hours, and some recipes even recommend chilling the milk mixture in the refrigerator for up to a full night in order to achieve a more stable and firmer consistency.

After the milk mixture has completely cooled and becomes solid, cut it into squares about an inch and a half on a side.

Start by bringing a large pot of vegetable oil to a high temperature. The pot should be deep enough so that the milk cubes can be completely submerged. After that, take each one in turn and coat it in cornstarch, followed by egg wash, and finally bread crumbs.

After that, place them carefully into the hot oil, and continue to fry them until they are golden brown.

And that wraps things up! It is recommended that the fried milk be served while it is still hot, dusted with powdered sugar, and accompanied by a separate bowl of sweetened condensed milk for dipping.

The people who have already made this recipe at home claim that these deep-fried milk cubes are seriously delicious. Some of them have even described the snack as the "fanciest, tastiest version of a deep-fried state fair food."

It was said that both the savoury flavour and the sweetness were "full and complex," and the fried texture went perfectly with the soft and hot interior. "These are definitely worth trying!" said one user.

Leche frita can be consumed in a variety of ways. It's delicious right out of the fryer (perhaps with a scoop of ice cream? Yum! ), but some people prefer it cold from the fridge or at room temperature.

Find out which of these three approaches is your favourite by giving them all a shot!
