Recall: Over 12,000 Kia Sportage units are at risk of fire

Attention, Kia Sportage owners! Are you aware of the latest developments surrounding your beloved vehicle?

It seems that the Sportage is once again making headlines, and this time it's not for its sleek design or impressive features.

Just last week, an Australian law firm announced plans to take legal action against car giant Kia over defective braking systems that have been identified as potential fire hazards. This follows the recall of the company’s two popular models, the Sportage and Sorento, reported in June of last year.

To add to the concerns of many Sportage owners nationwide, Kia Australia has now issued a recall of 12,581 units of the Sportage SUV due to a mechanical issue that may result in an engine compartment fire.

This recall covers 12,050 units of the SL-generation Sportage, which were manufactured from 2014 to 2015, as well as 531 units of the KM-generation Sportage, which were manufactured between 2007 and 2009.

The VIN lists can be accessed through this link.

According to the recall notice issued by Kia, certain models of the Kia Sportage may be at risk of an engine compartment fire due to a manufacturing defect in the vehicle's hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU).

The HECU is an essential component of the vehicle's braking system, including the Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control System and Traction Control System.

The defect may cause the HECU to short-circuit when exposed to moisture, even when the vehicle is switched off.

If your Kia Sportage falls within the recalled production years, you must take immediate action to have your vehicle inspected and repaired. Kia dealers will perform the inspection and repair free of charge. You can find one near you through this link.

As a safety precaution, Kia Australia advises that until your vehicle is repaired, you should avoid parking it near any flammable structures or enclosed areas such as a garage.

For more information or to confirm if your vehicle is affected by the recall, you can contact Kia Australia Customer Service at 131 542. You can also reach them through their website at www.kia.com.au or through their email at [email protected].
Key Takeaways

  • Kia Australia recalled a total of 12,581 units of its Sportage SUV due to a manufacturing defect.

This recent recall for the Sportage SUV is adding up to the list of Kia's recall history, making it quite a rocky road for the company.

As previously mentioned, Kia had to recall a significant number of Sportage and Sorento vehicles last year due to a software issue that could potentially lead to vehicle fires. The affected vehicles included those manufactured between 2015-2021 for the Sportage and 2014-2020 for the Sorento.

Goodness, me, you would think that in this day and age that proper Testing procedures would be carried out on vehicles before they are dumped on an unsuspecting public... whatever happened to Quality Assurance Testing whereby items ensure their products and services meet specified regulations and standards. It's a series of techniques that companies employ to prevent issues from occurring and ensure they satisfy the customer with their finished product.
Standards are getting lower and lower instead of higher and higher!
