Qantas airline rolls out exciting new features as international travel restarts

Flights will start again on Monday when the international border ban is finally thrown out, and Qantas passengers will definitely notice the airline has made a few key changes.

The national carrier promised to keep most things the same as they were pre-pandemic. But to make the airline more inclusive and virus-safe, Qantas took a few steps forward. Photo by Craig Platt.

Chief customer officer, Stephanie Tully, told reporters that passengers would start to notice the changes from next week.

She started her speech by paying respect to the country’s past, present, and emerging leaders, and then followed by “acknowledging the traditional owners of the land, the Gadigal people of the Eora nation”.

“Actually, ‘Acknowledgement to Country’ is one of the things you’ll hear our crew doing once we restart as well, which is a new addition and something we’re really excited about,” said the officer.

Qantas will also start to offer an entirely new menu, developed by famous chef Neil Perry. However, due to international restart dates changing rapidly, expect those changes to be rolled out gradually over the next few weeks.

The airline hopes the new menu will be in place by mid-November.

“One of the things we’ve been spending a lot of time on is talking to customers about the last few years, and we’ve listened to what they have to say. So, we are introducing plant-based options for all customers in all cabins,” Ms Tully said.

Some of the entries included in the plant-based menu are celeriac gratin with roast fennel, peas, mushroom and onion sauce and a ratatouille pasta bake with a herb crumb, cauliflower and green beans.

Iconic Australian desserts such as Paddle Pops and Splices will also be added to the in-flight menu.

Passengers will also notice a change in the airline’s typical economy snack bar. To lessen public contact and cross-contamination, the staff will approach the customers with snacks and drinks instead of the other way.

“It’s one great example of our team pivoting with the times. So, we’ll be roaming the economy cabin constantly with snacks and drinks, so it’s almost like a roaming movie service,” Ms Tully said.

The entire flight check-in process may seem all new and complicated, but rest assured, Qantas will guide its customers through the new world of travel.

“We’ve spent a lot of time preparing to make sure we can help our customers make it feel like a journey that is easy,” she said.
