Professional cleaner shares the common mistake that makes the worst chore way harder

Cleaning household items can be a tedious task, especially when it comes to blinds.

Whether they're vertical or Venetian, blinds are notorious for being one of the most time-consuming items to clean, partly due to all the places dirt can accumulate in their numerous slats.

But what if we told you that there's a common mistake that's making this already dreaded chore even harder?

Kacie Stephens, a professional cleaner, has shared her insights on the best way to clean blinds and the common mistakes many of us may be making.

The first step in cleaning blinds, she explained, should always be dry dusting using a microfibre cloth.

'Microfibre is static, static helps the dust stick—it's a magnet effect,' she explained.

'But when you add liquid of any kind? Water or a cleaning product? That dust turns to mud, and those strings that hold the blinds together get *really* dirty. So your blinds end up looking way, way worse.'

After dry dusting, the professional cleaner then suggests using a clean microfibre cloth, slightly dampened with a spray made of water and a gentle cleaning product.

'Never the blinds. This controls the places the liquid touched and reduces the likelihood of messing up the strings,' she advised.

Unfortunately, there's no shortcut to avoid the physical effort of cleaning blinds.

Most blinds are difficult or impossible to remove, so you'll likely need to use a step ladder and bend up and down to clean them.

'Yes, in an ideal world, you take them down to clean, but that's not practical (or even possible) with the ones we encounter so we do them while they're hanging.

'

However, there is a tip that can make the process a bit easier.

It’s best to clean blinds from the top down, especially if your blinds are Venetian style.

This is a standard cleaning rule for any dusting task as it ensures that dust will fall onto a section you haven't cleaned yet, rather than re-dirtying a space you've already cleaned.

As for what cleaning product to use, a simple mixture of detergent and warm water will suffice.

The Importance of Regular Cleaning

While cleaning blinds can be a tedious task, it's important to do it regularly.

Dust accumulation can not only make your blinds look dirty but can also trigger allergies and respiratory issues.

Regular cleaning can help maintain a healthier living environment and prolong the life of your blinds.
Key Takeaways
  • Cleaning blinds can be a challenging task due to their design and the dust they accumulate.
  • A professional cleaner suggested dry dusting with a microfibre cloth before introducing any liquid.
  • Cleaning from the top down was also recommended, as it prevents re-dirtying cleaned sections.
  • A mixture of warm water and detergent as an effective and affordable cleaning solution.

I have Venetian blinds in my kitchen even when I clean them they still look dirty l hate them and you can’t take them down. My father used to take ours down and hang them on the clothes line and wash them.and yes it’s common sense to start at the top.😍

Good reason not to have blinds I think. Most curtains are much easier to take down and wash. I have noticed most younger people have blinds but no curtains. I don’t think windows are finished without curtains.

Ah to be on cleaning duty in a house with blinds :ROFLMAO: I used a wet rag and went through each gap from top to bottom
Pain in the proverbial butt. Every time I have a unit inspection I make sure the blinds in the kitchen are always up.🙀
