Product Safety Australia recalls popular kitchen appliance over fire and injury risks

A popular kitchen appliance has been urgently recalled, raising alarms among households across the country.

The unexpected announcement has left many concerned about the safety of their kitchen gadgets.

As this story unfolds, it highlights the importance of product safety and the measures taken to protect consumers from potential hazards.

The BlendJet2 portable blender has been urgently recalled from major retailers across Australia due to alarming reports that it could overheat and potentially catch fire while in use or while charging.

Product Safety Australia, in coordination with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), has issued a recall notice after users reported injuries and property damage.

The core of the issue lies with the metal blades of the blender, which may break during operation.

This defect presents a grave threat of ‘serious injury’ if the metal fragments are unwittingly mixed with food or drinks, leading to choking hazards or severe lacerations if consumed.

Furthermore, there have been instances where the blenders overheated to the point of catching fire, resulting in burn injuries and fire damage to property.

The ACCC's recall notice is clear: ‘Consumers should stop using the blender immediately.’

It's crucial to check your BlendJet 2 portable blender's serial number, which can be found on the bottom of the base.

If your blender's serial number falls between 5201000000 and 5542999999, it may be affected by this recall.

These blenders were sold from October 2020 through November 2023 at various retailers, including Harvey Norman, JB HiFi, Myer, Costo, The Good Guys, Kitchen Warehouse, and Mini-Max, as well as online.

BlendJet has responded to these reports, stating on their website that none of the incidents have led to ‘serious injury or significant property damage’.

They offered a refund or a replacement base to ‘mitigate the potential occurrence of these issues when the unit is used as directed’.

It's important to note that BlendJet2 portable blenders currently on the market are not affected by this recall, as they have been updated with the necessary modifications to ensure safety.
