Pop star Harry Styles rocks $7 Bunnings item on stage – see the hardware store’s cheeky response

Some people might not know who Harry Styles is, but we can assure you the British pop singer is a worldwide superstar! With a fanbase that spreads across the globe, this music icon has the power to make anything go viral.

And recently, he proved just how influential he can be.

With the Australian leg of Love On Tour well underway, Harry is making headlines for donning an ‘iconic’ Aussie accessory on stage – which promptly sent his fans into a frenzy.

We all know that age-old saying ‘all publicity is good publicity’, but we don't think Bunnings was expecting the kind of publicity they got during Harry Styles’ concert at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium – while he was wearing their famous straw hat on stage.

In a video uploaded by another fan on the social media platform, TikTok, the straw hat can be seen being thrown onto the stage. Without skipping a beat and, much to the delight of his fans, the singer caught the hat in mid-air and placed it onto his head, as he continued to dance before the crowd.

Hardware store Bunnings have paid tribute to Harry and didn’t miss a beat on capitalising off the viral moment.

The retailer also took to TikTok and reuploaded the same video from the fan, and captioned it with:

‘Harry “Styles” our straw hat so well; it’s the best outfit choice.’

Harry’s Aussie fans were quick to comment on Bunnings’ video.

‘He’s one of us now,’ one said.

‘Bunnings, you’re about to become an international fashion staple, brace yourselves,’ another wrote.

Someone else commented: ‘New Bunnings ad campaign feat. Harry Styles’, while another added that the straw hat was going to sell out now thanks to the impromptu advertisement.

Instead of replying to the last user, Bunnings uploaded another video on its TikTok account, this time explaining how to ‘shop Harry’s look’ on its website.

The video was a screen recording of the hardware store’s website. Someone was showing that the search bar had been recalibrated so that every time customers type ‘Harry Styles’ in it, the first product that will appear is Bunnings’ $7 Large Straw Hat.

Aussies got a kick out of the video, with many saying the change had been made to the Bunnings app and its website in New Zealand too.

‘Well played, Bunnings,’ one social media user wrote.

‘Now this is how you do marketing! Well done,’ another replied under the video.

You can watch Bunnings’ ‘how-to’ video below:

This makes it easier for Harry’s fans to get the same hat as their idol, but they may have to act quickly as there’s a chance that the item will probably fly off the shelves.

‘This is actually brilliant but I’m kind of worried about us Aussies that love our Bunnings hats and have worn them for years getting them,’ someone added.

This isn’t the first time Bunnings capitalised on a viral moment.

Earlier this year, a woman’s cup holder hack went viral on TikTok after she managed to secure a popular bottle in her car. The woman initially had difficulty fitting her 1-litre Frank Green canister into her car’s cup holder. But she turned to her local Bunnings and bought a PVC invert to solve her problem. Bunnings quickly caught on to the hype surrounding their item. You can read more details about this story here.

Bunnings has also been on the news lately for making big changes to their store. Last month, they introduced a feature called ‘sensory maps’ that they said was designed to make shopping easier for thousands of their customers in Australia and New Zealand. More details about this new feature can be read here.

The hardware store is also set to make its biggest product expansion yet, as it recently announced that it will now offer thousands of pet products, including food, toys, dog beds, and kennels across its national network by the end of March this year. It was reported that this move was done in a bid to tap into the $10 billion-dollar pet market. You can read Bunnings’ explanation here.
Key Takeaways

  • Harry Styles sent fans into a frenzy on his Australia tour when he put on the iconic Bunnings straw hat, which was thrown to him while he was performing on stage.
  • A fan caught this on video and uploaded it to TikTok.
  • Bunnings was quick to capitalise on the viral moment and posted the same clip to its TikTok account.
  • The Bunnings website was also quickly recalibrated, so when customers type 'Harry Styles' into the search bar on its website, the large straw hat is the first product that pops up.

So, Bunnings is now another "influencer"? Is the mental capacity of some sheeple so far down the evolutionary scale that, just because somebody wears something, they automatically have to follow the new "trend" set by this "idol"? Will they automatically look like him? How long before the NEXT BIG THING, the latest "must-have" accessory or fashion item, comes along? If a pop star dons a purple polka-dotted bow tie with a plastic koala dangling down from it while visiting the beach, how many thousands of teenage girls world wide will follow her and do the same thing? If a tennis player who has reached the top levels in the game wears a particular brand of shoes, how many thousands of sheeple will go ahead and buy and wear the same brand -- will it make them better players by wearing that brand? I'll save my money, thanks.

Hi,
Why would someone have a Bunnings straw hat at a concert anyway, very strange?

Way to go, I have several Bunnings hats and wear them a lot. I used to wear them to the grandkids sport, my husband called me his country bumpkin and wanted to disown me. I love these hats.
