Police investigate travel agency accused of swindling over $200,000 from holiday seekers

Travel often becomes a beacon of adventure, a chance to explore the world and create memories that last a lifetime. Many of us save meticulously, dreaming of the day we can cast off the bowlines and sail away from the safe harbour.

But what happens when the trust we place in travel agencies to turn our dreams into reality is shattered?

This is the question on the minds of many after a travel agency was accused of allegedly duping dozens of customers out of their hard-earned holiday funds.

The now-defunct Travel World Sydney is accused of taking a staggering $234,534 from hopeful travellers over the last 17 months without making any real bookings.

With 28 official complaints lodged since January 2023, the situation paints a grim picture of a holiday dream turned nightmare.

The physical presence of the agency has vanished, the store abandoned, and the phone lines disconnected, leaving behind only a ghostly website that still boasts of crafting unique adventures and guiding travellers through the intricacies of international travel.

The website read: ‘We don’t just plan trips, we craft adventures that’ll be just for you.’

‘We’ll guide you through the visa process, translate those confusing menus, and ensure you have all the insider tips to avoid tourist traps and experience the true culture.’

For the victims of this alleged scam, the path to restitution is fraught with challenges.

While some may have been able to request chargebacks from their card issuers upon discovering the fraudulent nature of their bookings, such claims are typically bound by a strict timeframe that varies from 45 to 120 days after the charge.

Unfortunately, New South Wales Fair Trading, which is investigating the complaints, has confirmed that most consumers would be outside this timeframe, leaving them in a precarious position.

The gravity of the situation has drawn the attention of NSW Police, who are also investigating the matter after numerous reports from individuals who claim their travel arrangements were paid for but not honoured.

Natasha Mann, the NSW Fair Trading Commissioner, expressed her stance on the issue, stating, 'This type of dishonest behaviour, if proven, is unacceptable and hurts consumers and the marketplace.'

She reaffirmed the commitment of NSW Fair Trading to protect consumers from such illegal activities.

‘Under the Australian Consumer Law, businesses must not accept payment for products or services if they don’t intend to supply the product or service,’ she continued.

‘Penalties in respect of an offence are up to $50 million for a corporation and $2.5 million for an individual.’

As of publishing, Travel World Sydney has not released a statement.

As we await further developments and hope for justice for those affected, this situation serves as a stark reminder to all of us to exercise caution when planning our travels.

It's essential to conduct thorough research on travel agencies, read reviews, and ensure they are reputable and accredited by recognised industry bodies.

Moreover, it's wise to pay for travel expenses using methods that offer consumer protection, such as credit cards or secure payment services, and to monitor the booking process and any subsequent transactions closely.
