Pharmacies urge Australians to resist panic-buying Panadol for children amid supply chain fears

If you’ve been thinking about hoarding tons of Panadol for your grandkids because you’re worried about shortages caused by the recent surge in flu cases combined with supply issues, you may want to reconsider.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s Victorian branch president Anthony Tassone pleaded for Australians to resist panic-buying the product for children as flu cases skyrocketed across the state.

“We do encourage the public to please not panic buy,” he said.

“And we’ve certainly seen an increase in demand for those products in pharmacies recently.”

“Everyone has experience, whether it’s at the workplace, school or junior sport, with widespread illness at the moment – whether it’s the flu, colds or Covid.”

However, Mr Tassone also mentioned that pharmacies across Victoria are often required to set a purchase limit on the ‘very effective’ medications.

“They don’t require a prescription, but to ensure there’s sufficient stock to go around there may be purchase limits,” he said.

“We have seen periodic shortages and out of stocks throughout the pandemic and pharmacies have done everything they can to help their patients and communities.

“They did return to stock, maybe not across the full product range, but there were products available returning to stock late last week.”

Cases of the flu in Victoria have increased by over 30 percent in the past week from 10,000 to 15,000 reported cases — way more in comparison to the combined flu case numbers from the past two years.

A total of 148 Victorians were hospitalised with the flu this year, 65 of whom were children.

Health Minister Martin Foley admitted: "Our system is under pressure like it has never been before.”

Mr Foley added that the government is set to provide $12 billion into a pandemic recovery plan, which was announced in the state budget earlier this month, in an effort to ease the pressure on Victoria's health system.

I do not understand why children are given Panadol. I brought up 3 children and never ever did they get a panadol. Maybe half an asprin in honey occasionally, just as I was given as a child. Back in the dark ages. Do not worry about climate change killing, parents are doing that for the planet. Doctor, Doctor my child has a sore toe.

I never gave my kids panadol, or any other tablets come to that. We had a rule in our house that if you were sick enough to need medicine or pills you had to go to bed as that was the only time the medicine worked. If they were not really poorly the thought of loosing a day stuck in bed did not appeal to them. If they were really sick bed was the best place as resting and sleep helped their bodies heal.:)
